My 2004 Disco has 6200 miles on it and it split a transmission cooler line driving down the freeway yesterday. Man, what a mess. Aside from the huge inconvenience Land Rover seems to be taking pretty good care of me.

Here is my question. . . The dealer will work on the truck today to fix the split line. Given that I had to drive about a mile and a half before finding a safe place to pull off the freeway, is there a significant risk of transimssion damage? The truck was still spilling ATF fluid by the time I got it parked so I don't thing the transmission went dry. Anything I should specifically ask my dealer to check?

Has anyone else had this happen on a newer Disco? My concern is that the general manager of the dealership had indicated that he has seen this on a few Discos.

It depends on what you consider newer. I have a 2000 model and I lost a transmission line. I estimate that I drove about 5 miles before I noticed anything. I patched it the best I could and refilled with 2 1/2 quarts to top it off and got it to the shop. They said that they were not able to detect any damage to the transmission. But you gotta hate it when things like this happen, especially on an 04 model.

Are you talking about one of the 1/2" metal lines? How can they blow? I'd want to know exactly why it blew, was there a blockage or something? Did they tell you anything more?

Dean, sorry for the confusion. Not the metal line but the reinforced rubber line that comes out of the transmission cooler/radiator.

Did you see the line? Was it rubbing one something? Its worth having a good look around the engine bay even on a new vehicle, on mine the washer pipes for the front windscreen (you know, the ones full of flammable methanol) we melting onto the intensely hot metal pipes coming out of the ABS block. They almost melted through, and I suppose if they had and I used the washers, the stuff could have spewed all over the exhaust manifold and then....... FIRE!

Thanks Dean. I saw the line yesterday but didn't crawl around underneath for a closer look as there was hot ATF fluid everywhere. I was able to see that the hose split right where it enters the transmission cooler. There didn't seem to be anything around it that could have been rubbing but I'll take a closer look when I get the vehicle back.

On another note, does anyone know if the ATF that is now all over the back of my truck corrosive to paint? Any tips on what will take this stuff off?
