Did a search on the board but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. It's a '96 Disco btw.

Started the truck this morning after my stepfather turned it on quick to pull it out of the driveway so he could get out. Seemed to be idling pretty high (~1800 rpm), but it was cold out last night so didn't think much of it. Well it didn't settle down the whole drive to work. And when I got to work I put it in neutral to rev it a bit to see if it would help it settle, well as soon as put it in N it shot up to ~2500-3000 rpm, the same in Park. So had to go into work. Came out for lunch figured, hey maybe it was a fluke. It wasn't so I decided to drive home and me and my mom would ride back to work in her car. That's when I noticed that it can accelerate to 25-30 mph without me even touching the gas, on flat ground. Then when stopping it comes to an almost complete stop then downshifts to first and creeps ahead again. When I got home I noticed it was pretty warm in the engine bay, but I figured it would be with that high of an idle.

Any idea? I bought it 2 weeks ago so I'm going to try and get the dealer I bought it from eat the cost...

would probably first check to see if the throttle linkage/cable is sticking.

My D1 did that when it was starting to overheat. As soon as I put it in Park, the engine shot up to about 3.000 RPM's. I figured the cooling system had air in it because of a recent heater core replacement, so I bled the cooling system and I haven't had that problem ever since. You might want to check if there is a leak in a hose or something because even the slightest leak will introduce air into the cooling system.

Chris - Same problem 1996 Disco. Mine came after I had to disc the battery. Took to dealer & they couldn't fix. Wanted to replace everything and the kitchen sink. Said no thanks. This is a very very common problem on the 1996 and you will commonly see several threads about the high idle going at the same time on this board. Ugh. Honestly I replaced just about everything & had it set up on the testbook too. I refuse to replace my ECU because the truck runs very well. Here is what I did - I disconnected the stepper motor and "tweaked" it so it keeps the idle at around 800 rpms. Actually my stepper has been disconnect for about 2 years now. Everyonce and a great while it will stall on startup, but I think that is because of a bad fuel temp sensor. So - here is an experiment for you (obviously check all the normal stuff first - stuck throttle linkage, etc )pull out the stepper motor and turn it "out" several times. Put it back in disconnected. I guarantee you your idle will come down and stay down. Tweak until it is just right. Now I know this is not a "fix" but we've stumped numerous dealers and Disco owners worldwide with our "high idle" problems.

Mine was the ECU. Replaced with second hand and problem solved. Tried the stepper motor(unplugging)but stall on cold starts was a real pain. If every last option fails check the ECU.

it was just the throttle linkage sticking, going to get some machine oil and lube it up...
