I got a P1178 FUEL COMP RAN code from my OBD2 reader. I looked it up on equus and it tells me that for a Land Rover it means "AMFR Correction At Maximum Positive Value".

I'm new to this code reading business. Anybody know what that means in plain English?

JAIME: I got P1179.. Which is Maximum Negative AMFR. I had two blown cats (catalytic converter) and two bad 02 sensors upstream the cats. Changed the sensors, installed two new cats.. cleared the codes and now everything is back to normal. The LR dealership said that the code we blew has to do with air flow (fuel) metering, my suggestion would be to check your cats first then move to the sensors, lastly check the air filter too. That is what LR did for me.

I think you're on to something. I also ran a test on my O2 sensors, and one of them failed. I have a 97 d1 with 110k miles, so its no surprise.

My cats seem physically OK, and I passed the NJ smog test last July, so it may just be the sensor.

Now, I'm still curious as to what AMFR means...

FMFR and AMFR These stand for fuel mass flow rate and air mass flow rate respectively, at least that is what I found when doing a quick search.

The causes were stated as O2's, MAF (Mass Air Flow), leaking exhaust, vacuum leak, fuel pressure issues.

Yes Joey thank you !! Joey you are very informative about these things..Cats, O2 sensors, air mass flow ..:-)
Jaime.. I am sure it is just a bad 02 sensor..that would be the plausible reason for your fuel metering problem (I would think). Joey found a site where the 02 sensors are $52.00. That is a superb price..Mine were 135.00 :-(

:-) its true look in the DWeb search.

(Or Air mass flow rate. Its trying to compensate for too low fuel pressure, check the fuel filter and pressure, then the MAF sensor (you can borrow mine for a while if you like, its not going anywhere!)

Dean: There are days that I feel that way..AMFR=another mother f****** repair. In fact today was one of them! Running late for court and the car would not start. Luckily it was just a loose battery terminal.
MAF sensors are NOT cheap! I saw one on EBay "buy it now" for 450.00. EEK!

I'm gonna measure the resistance on that fucking POS filament in the MAF sensor, and then find a $0.20 light bulb with the right filament, and sell them for $50 reconditioned!

You were spot on!

I decided to start on the fuel filter since its been on the truck for about 55k miles.

Could not get the damn thing off! On a D1, the fuel filter is mounted on the frame in fron of the right rear wheel. It gets a lot of crud on it. One side is accesible, the other side is for skinny contortionist types. Anyway, I gave it a shot, but things were so tight that I was afraid I would break a line, and then be stuck, so I discarded my pride, and took it to the dealer. I figured let them deal with it.

They had to cut the lines and use a "L/R line repair kit". They worked on it while I waited. 2 hours and $145 later I was out the door and on the way to work.

I immediately noticed a performance improvement, the truck seemed to accelerate better. I hooked up my OBD-2 cable, and turned off the check engine light, and so far so good, it has not come on again, and no codes are being thrown.

I also bought some electrical contact cleaner, so I may give the MAF element a squirt or two if it doesn't look too fragile. And maybe the O2 sensors as well.

Melissa,

I think that the fuel filter was probably the biggest but not the only cause of the problem.

I know my O2 sensors are bad (at least my OBD-2 software says that 3 out of 4 failed a test).

So I guess its a contributory factor in a fuel/air issue that the ECU tried to correct by an air adjustment. Who knows what the Oxygen and MAF sensors are telling it. So it may just be a big pile of confused silicon!
