got a 2000 D2, and I want to go from "oil" to synthetic...

how should i do this? I heard that the switch requires about 3 oil changes in quick succession to get all the gunk out. What else should i clean at the same time (intake, etc??), and with what products?

I am particularly interested in getting everything "clean", de-gunking everything.

what products should i use as both a cleaner and as additives, and what brand of oils and additives should I use, and what probably more important, what "probes" or sensors should I replace.

I get HORRIBLE millage on 93 octane (8 mpg approx, with conservative driving)

the LR dealer just tells me to leave it all alone, that none of its a worry, but none-the-less, i want this truck to last for ever if possible input would be appreciated!

BTW, i ALWAYS use 93 or higher gas, and usually use shell, sonoco, or rarely BP or citgo, if thats important at all...

thanks

Just drain your existing oil, fill with synth, change filter. There is no magic to it. The detergents in the synthetics will start cleaning your engine internals. It might be a good idea after 500 - 1000 miles to just change the filter again, then resume recommended change intervals.

8mpg is very bad, synthetics won't fix that. How many miles, when was the last tuneup, etc etc?

Cold turkey is fine for switching to synth oil. There's no need to step-up slowly to synth oil.

Find a BG44K dealer and purchase the fuel additive. BG44K works far better than the Land Rover products and was recommend to me by someone at the local Rover dealer. The BG44K intake cleaner works fantastic also. I used it on my '95 Disco intake and it removed all kinds of carbon build-up.

Try changing the air filter and fuel filter too.

In my experience, with dealers and people in general:

"Should have" ¹ "did"

It's a regular Formula For Life :-)

8 MPG?!?!?!?!
You HAVE to take it back to the dealer or good independant, and have them use the Rovacom analyzer or equivelant. Smell gas?
Switching to synthetics is not your priority right now.
Where do you live...maybe someone can recommend the best place to take it thats close to you.

yeah, no shit.....8 mpg? You sure?

the LR dealer just tells me to leave it all alone, that none of its a worry

something is not right here....

with the price of gas nowadays & 8 mpg, I'd kick that thing to the curb

if gas is $2.11 per gallon, you are paying one cent for every two feet you travel.

1 cent per two feet?
I hope your wrong.
Let's see:
8 miles per gallon is 42,240 ft (5,280 x 8)
If gas is 2.11 per gallon, than:
You travel 42,240 ft for 211 cents,
(42,240/211=200.19)
= 200.19 ft per penny of fuel.
Right?
Whew! You almost gave me a heart attack cuz I only get about 12 mpg :-)

60k miles, not familiar with D2's and O2 sensor replacement recommendations, but with D1's I believe a bad O2 sensor can cause poor mpg

well, i ran through a full tank of 93 shell gas this week, here's the results:

235 miles, and thats with modest controlled driving (ie - not my usual city driving).

the tank is 26 gallons right?

anyways, its probably important for me to tell you that i live in cleveland ohio, and i live IN the city, AND i run a restraunt and were building another, so I am doing alot of in city, rushed driving most of the time (stupid for a LR I know, but its the best truck any of us got for moving food and stuff)

I was getting worse milage before, BUT, I was also using gas brands like citgo, and BP, not my favorite brands.

The dealer I used is "supposedly" award winning, but I thought something was odd when I got a 175 detail job during my 60k tuneup, and it was nothing more than a good car wash and vacuum job.

I don't know, I am thinking of taking it to the place I bought it from, and having them look around, and do a *thorough* look around. The problem is they are not used to clients like me how are very particular about preventitive maintainance, they are used to soccer moms and suits.

the dealer I purchased from and *usually* use for maintainance BTW is http://www.landroversolon.com/

this is where I got my 60k http://www.landroverwestside.com/

if anyone has a good recommend for some quality service in northern ohio, please feel free!!
