I am considering installing 1" or 1.5" coil spring spacers to my Disco II. Now I know some of you will respond that I need to go a new or modified suspension route with new springs and the whole set-up, but there is not enough new clothing and handbags in the world to justify to my wife that I "need" the new supsension. SO, with that out of the way, what does adding a spacer do? Can it be done? Should it be done? What will it hurt? Just looking for a bit more ground clearance for different tires. Don't do a lot of off-roading but have already scraped.

Jayson,
In short, I would not recommend it. The main reason is the fact you are significantly raising your center of gravity. Without stiffer springs to compensate, your are driving a tumble buggy. Also, the stock shocks will "top out" if you ever do go wheeling. They are shorter and the extra 1-1/2" will stretch them to the max. So with that in mind, start counting hand bags, you will have a happy wife and a happier rover.

Thanks, I will just put the 100 bucks toward new springs.

If I wanted 1.5 - 2" of lift without modifying the vehichle to rock crawl, what would I need? Springs? Shocks? and?

Ok, so for every 100 spent in new suspension mods, I spend 25 towards new something for the wife. Probably the least I can do.

If you go with a max of 2" you should not need anything else. You may hear conversation about the non servicable u-joint needing to be replaced with one that can be greased. I have been running my 2" rovertym lift for 20,000 miles without a problem (knock on wood). You can get the "whole set up" from rovertyme for about 595.00. I think rovertym springs are superior to OME but that is just my humble opinion. I am sure plenty of guys on this board have differing ideas.

Jake, you have to get with the program. Keep in mind that the wife won't notice ANYTHING that you do to the truck. Example, I took the dash out of my RRC last weekend to work on the A/C. Went out for dinner and my wife didn't even notice that the dash was missing. It's amazing how much you can do to your truck without your wife ever realizing. Oh, and you have to be able to do the work while she's out shopping (I've got the spring swap down to about 20 minutes) :-)

But seriously, put the money toward a decent 2" lift kit - OME springs and shocks are my choice but there are others as Brian mentioned.

Steve,
it won't hurt to get the right wife, too - my better half suggested two modifications: lift it, and get rid of the front air dam.
However, she disapproves of mud tires on steel rims, and roof rack... Neutral on most other stuff.

You are right about not noticing. I do have the right wife though. I was supposed to come home with a new car for her. We sold hers and I went out to get one of two AWD wagons for her. Came home with a LR DISCO II, for me. She drives my old car. Yes, I'm still married. I, of course, did this after only a month of being married.

I just checked and the cost of springs isn't that bad. I for some reason thought it was much more. Is there a good guide for the swap? If not, I have a great, cheap, mechanic.

British Pacific is delivering my OME setup this weekend.

So, if I go with either the RTE or OME springs and shocks, what else would I need to swap them? Different mounting brackets? I am not going after anything more than 2" at most. Want it to be simple, but durable.

The OME setup doesn't require anything but swapping out the springs and shocks. Nothing else needed. I don't know about the RTE but I'm pretty sure it's the same way.

FYI
RTE is the same way. But you get a true 2" lift as opposed to 1.5" OME.....
