Hello. i am a new 03 Disco2 owner looking to get it ready for some offroad trips.

These are my plans. any advice is appreciated
ARB sahara winch bumper

sliders thinking aedo, arb or rovertyme (the sill mount kinda worries me tho)

2 inch spring lift. not sure what springs to use. OME rovertyme or other options?

rear bumper. I am still looking for options. I need to retain bumper lights due to my reverse lights being in the bumper. any help would be appreciated.

tires. i have always run BFG MTs. had 32 KMs on my ZR2 Blazer but i am seriously considering the firestone destination MTs. Any thoughts

http://webpages.charter.net/loydster/2001_Blazer2%20/LW%20high%20centered%203.JP G

I am also replacing the stereo. JL 500.5 alpine 7995, mb quart or bostona acoustics in the doors. Anyone know how deep a speaker can go in an 03s door. they appear to be 5.25 speakers. and a kappa perfect 12 in thre right rear storage/jumpseat area.

Any thoughts, advice or experiances would be appreciated

Thanks
Loydster

bumper - dont go ARB. Its big, heavy and plows through things. At least when you rides in Moab or Colorado style trails. Check RTE, Roversnorth, TREK outfitters.

sliders - check EE, Red Rock Rovers, Slick Rock Fabrication too. They all making nice products

rear bumper - TJM or Greg Devis or weird tubular one :-)

tires - up to you. Depends what you want to do, what you planning to drive

springs - OME, NWP, RTE, Bearmacn(blue monsters from dap) - depends on load/style/preferences.

stereo - dont care :-)

you also forgot - CDL, shocks, underbody protection, steering protection, lockers, roof rack, lights, winch... :-)

Seriously - if you in looks - go your route. If you in real stuff - first get recovery (at least hi-lift and jate rings/tow hooks) and tyres, then protection (diff guards, steering relocation, steering guard plate, petrol tank plate), sliders. Then you can think of more serious recovery - winch and bumpers and traction - locks.

But if you dont have CDL that might be your very first priority before you hit trail more complex than unpaved road.

Loydster,
I have the ARB on my '03. Install was easy. Not as good of an approach angle as other designs but you keep the factory fog/driving lights. When you have the stock bumper off, do the wiring for the new lights in the ARB bumper. It will be easier to get to the stock headlight assembly this way. I haven't got sliders yet, they are being made. I wanted the Dreadnaughts but they aren't making any right now so Ho directed me to slickrock fabrication. I think they're similar in design with the one piece sill mount.
I have the 2" OME lift with 265/75R16 BFG MT's. Slight rubbing, but only on the plastic fender liner.

Let me know if you find out anything about a rear bumper, looking myself.
Shane

Sergei, I've done pretty well without CDL in my '03. I think one should drive it stock and see if you need it for what you want to do.

thanks for the help. forgot to mention. this is going to be used for mild to moderate wheeling until i can have something else for the daily driver.

eventual plans include arb lockers front and rear so i was gonna skip the CDL for now

Uzbad when you describe the arb is that the bull bar or the sahara bar. The sahara is supposed to be lighter and better angles. Shocks i just included as part of the 2 inch lift.

Where do i get a greg davis rear bumper?

anyone had issues with sill mounted sliders. Seems like a iffy place to mount something that is supposed to support the Disco

My RoverTym HD sliders with nerf bars work great, saved my ass plenty of times with no problem. I think ther's 12 mounting bolts on each slider, 6 into the frame. Nerf bars make it a lot easier for friends to get in the back. I have a Safari Gard front bumper, i like the look, but don't bother with dealing with Safari Gard, nightmare. Go rovertym Slim line. www.rovertym.com

Cheers

Jack

Both the sahara and deluxe offer pretty close if not the same clearance, it's hard to tell from just the pics though. I can tell you from experience that the ARB sticks out more not just down, so you get doubly screwed on approach angle. Although with the lift it's much better than stock and I like mine.

If you mount sliders to the frame only then there's a longer moment arm to bend the sliders into the body of your rig. The sill mounted sliders, of the right design work great because there's essentially no moment arm (unless you have the nerf bars on them, but this is still minimal). (remember torque is force times distance)

Shane - i am not saying withut CDL truck is worthless. Hats off to you for wheeling it without one, but my personal opinion is that to have one is pretty good thing when you wheel. Its like that - yes you can make it in Subaru over Engineer Pass, but i wouldnt ever do it :-)

Anyway, back to protection:

Well if i'd have free 700$ i'd spend them on Rovertyme sliders with nerf bars, personally. I have similarly designed sliders on my XTerra (whoever live in Houston, can u contact shrockworks.com so we will get same great stuff for LR :-)) and they are great for getting in/out, putting people on to balance your truck when you going offcamber and nice jacking points when you need those. However http://slickrockfabrication.com/ (Dave Lucas, who wandering about here) offers nice ones too and price is very good, so i probably will get those when money would permit.

If it was worthless what would have been the point in buying it, so I know you're not saying it worthless. I agree on the CDL, but it's a pretty expensive mod to your rig if you don't already have it on your tcase, which I don't. I think with lockers, or TT or Detroit you can get along fine without spending the cash on another tcase with CDL. Now if my tcase had it, I would definately retrofit the incab shifter to it. I just need to get some lockers now, and my sliders.

I've had Rovertym sliders on for almost 2 years, saved my sills more than a few times, no problems at all with them. Rovertym front bumper too! Love it! Greg Davis rear Bumper that I love also.

There is an easy workaround for the rear lights that are in the bumper, especially if you have a roof rack. I've mounted lights on the back of the rack, and tucked the wires thru the rain gutter into the cavity above the the tail lights (yes, you have to drill a hole) in the truck. Then remove each tail light and cut the wire to the backup light and route that to your roof rack lights. Pull the bumper wires up into the cavity also and route the wire from the rear fogs to the roof rack lights. This makes the roof rack lights into reverse lights and manually operated rear work lights. Next route the blinker wire to the taillight where the backup light used to go and get an orange bulb in there to replace the white bulb. Do the same with the blinker on the other side, including pulling up the wires from the bumper. Now you have blinkers in the taillights, and far better quality reverse lights on the roof rack. It's one way to get away from the old bumper. In the tech section is a description of the rear lighting wires and their colors.

Randy i understand what your saying but my reverse lights are in my bumper. They moved them in 2003.

Loyd, simply leave your turn signals "as is" and follow the rewiring to mount your reverse lamps on your rack. You can wire a Hella worklamp to pull double duty both as a worklamp and a reverse lamp. Works like a charm.

Thanks for the kind words on my bumper guys. I appreciate it.

Loyd,

I recently put the 2" RTE kit on my 03 Disco...and would certainly recommend it.

As far as having a CDL, I just had mine off-road for the first time and was very impressed with the ETC. I was orginally following a similar thought pattern as far as lockers and cdl's but for now I'm definetly content with the ETC.

I agree, the ETC works well but I will upgrade in the future. It does what I need it to do right now.

I cant put the lights on my rack because i A. dont have a rack B. wont beable to get into the garage at work if i lift it and add a rack. So i need a rear bumper with a way to mount a reverse light. I saw one of you bumpers Greg and would like to obtain info on ordering one. The one i saw as on a red Disco with 2 red and 2 yellow lights in it.

I'd forgotten about the change in the '03/'04 lights on the DII, but Gregs method still rules. In a pinch you can mount a worklight/reverse lamp on the spare tire carrier. I should mention that the lighting workaround was Gregs suggestion to me for installing his bumper. The GD Bumper you saw with the red and yellow lights in it was customized by the owner if I am not mistaken. Gregs bumper doesn't come with any lights. I have the same problem with the roof rack, it has to come off whenever the truck comes into the garage for work. PIA, but thats the way it is! Good Luck!!
