I have a nasty vibration rattle in the dash of my Disco 1 that starts and stops when I accelerate. Sounds like it is coming from somewhere under the dash on the drivers side. Any ideas? Its driving me CRAZY!

I'm just trying to avoid tearing into the dash.... or better yet paying someone to do it!

I have done some exploring under the dash on the drivers side but you can't get into it very far.

I think i know what you're talking about with the dash here. I've got the same thing on my '95 D1.

All i did to 'fix' it was take some cardboard and fold it up so that it was about the size of the gap from the windshield to the dash, and tight enough so that it put some pressure on the dash. Even though this is a major hack, it seemed to cure the rattling for a few years really well. Of course i also usually have my stero turned up pretty loud to cover all the other rattles and squeaks that the truck has. Which i think is another good 'fix' to the problem :-)

I'd assume that the cause is a screw or screws comming loose and allowing the various parts of the dash to rub together and cause the noise. And of course this will be amplified by acceleration since that causes more vibration than just crusing along.

Now as to where or how many screws there are to fix this... i don't know as i've never attempted to really fix it. I just think of it as my truck talking to me, and i enjoy the conversation on the drives by myself :0

Not to question your trouble shooting ability, but is the rattle in the dash or could it possibly be the Cat's heat sheild rattling...LR's are know for this.

My 1st thought was that something had fallin down the defrost vents and was rattling. After closer inspection i'm somewhat convinced it is coming from under the steering column / up under the dash. What or where is the heat shield? Sorry i'm no mechanic!

If it is the heat sheild, this is under the Disco, there are two of the Cat's. One on each side of the Engine/Transmission.

One is right under the driver and one under the passenger.

If not this, then I would check around the fuze panel under the steering column.

my rattle went away..... i had been driving with my rear sway bar off because i had a shredded ball joint bushing and it was making this horrible squeeking noise that drove me insane. I put it back on 2 days ago and now the rattel is pretty much gone. I can only assume that during acceleration the forces imparted on the bushings telegraphs through the chassis and casuse enough body shake to make the interior components vibrate. so i would guess that by replacing the sway bar with all new busihings that i elimeating just enough of the telegraphing vibrations to keep the dash form rattling as bad as it did.

One thing that can be the rattle is the hose of the aircontinion running in the engines bay between the engine and the firewall. It may touches a bolt and making this awfull noise. I removed the centre part of the dash and put a friend to drive and put my hands in all the possible points(making a lot of scratces at my bare hands) and I was pretty sure that the rattle was somewhere there inside the dash. But I couldn't find where. At the end I looked carefully behind the engine and I saw a metal hose touches to a bolt. I moved it a little away and VIOLA!!!! the rattle was gone. Just my 0.2 cents

Took a look along the firewall and that didn't turn up anything. In my exploration in and under the dash I found all kinds of nice things....... plastic bottle caps for example but my rattle is still with me! and getting louder! Sounds like screw vibrating at a super high rate. Is there any easy way to get into the dash? I've been up through the access panels on both the passenger and driver's side, but you can only get so far.

To access the dash u have to remove:
1) the ashray and the clock and the coin holder and the switch panel at the opposite
2) the screws behind these items
3) the three knobs for temperature and air position(just pull them with a plier. Dont forget to put a cloth for not damaging them.
4) the radio
5) the plastic under the radio(with a small flat screwdriver)
6) the housing of the radio
7) the 2 screws above the radio(only seen when u remove it)

Thats all I remember, because it is a long time ago that I did that.

Guys, one of the main LR sales points in 95 was the easily removable dash cluster which is called a "binnacle" in the LR book. May I assume you'd held this down to see if the rattle got better? I've thought about using some calk on mine to keep the binnacle from scraping the dash.

The two screws that hold the "binnacle" on pull through rather routinely, and the clips that hold on the back half can self destruct. If you're really bored, you can recreate the clips out of epoxy. Ask me how I know.

Did some exploring over the weekend and I have come to the uneducated conclusion that the rattle is coming from something that has fallen down through the dash defrost vents. I got creative and lowered a magnet down to see if I could fish anything out. Nothing. Any ideas?
