These are the specifications on the cams for the Rover distributorless engines. I think these may be the only two available off the shelf cams for these engines.

4.0: Intake and exhaust lift .403

Duration @ .004, intake 262, exhaust 266
IO 19-BTDC, IC 63-ABDC
EO 58-BBDC, EC 28-ATDC

Duration @ .050, intake 193, exhaust 193
IO (12)-ATDC, IC 25-ABDC, lobe center ~106
EO 25-BBDC, EC (12)-BTDC, lobe center ~108

4.6: Intake and exhaust lift .424

Duration @ .004, intake 269, exhaust 274
IO 14-BTDC, IC 75-ABDC
EO 68-BBDC, EC 26-ATDC

Duration @ .050, intake 205, exhaust 206
IO (12)-ATDC, IC 37-ABDC, lobe center ~111
EO 38-BBDC, EC (12)-BTDC, lobe center ~115

Based on the specs above I would say that the 4.0 cam would be very conservative grind. Less fuel consumed and longer valve train life.

I would say that the 4.6 cam is a little peppier, but still has a very smooth idle. Better grind for highway speeds.

Do you think there would be any issue putting a 4.6 cam in a 4.0?

I have a brand new stock 4.6 cam shaft I'd be willing to sell cheap, if anyone's interested.

I also have the stock 4.6 timing chain & gears and I think I still have the oil pick up tube. All brand new condition.

I am thinking the 4.6 cam will wind up a little tighter in the 4.0 but will drop the compression slightly.... Nice duration but thats an iffy swap on a stock motor.... Real iffy..

Well, you never know 'til you try. Could be the greatest thing since sliced bread, putting a 4.6 cam in a 4.0.

Anyway, I'd sell the stock 4.6 camshaft, timing chain, timing gears and the oil pick up tube all for $200.00 including shipping. These are all in brand new condition. That's less than half what AB or the dealer would charge.

It'd be interesting to see how the Piper cams' specs compare to the stock 4.0 and 4.6 cams, although I don't see a Land Rover cam on Piper's website. Is RPi the exclusive source for Piper's LR cams? I've got an RP4 cam that came on my 4.6 w/distributor, but don't know if Piper makes any for the GEMS motors.
