my D2's been making a nasty, whining noise coming from the vicinity of the transfer case. only 7800 miles. I took it to the dealer today and apparently the t-case is bad, so they're ordering me a new one. these people are idiots: i asked if there was any way I could get an '04 t-case with CDL put in to replace mine (!), and the service guy didn't even know that the 03's didn't already come with it. apparently, though, they'll send a new case according to my VIN number, which i'm guessing means unfortunately no CDL. any newer D2 owners been in this situation?!

yeah, last yr, b4 the 04's w/CDL came out.Warranty only covers like replacement, no "upgrade" to 04 or pre-03 CDL t-cases. If u want upgrade, u gotta pay for it. u shudda been nicer to the "idiots" maybe they would've given you credit towards the CDL.

i actually asked very nicely if i could pay for an '04 case. they said no. you're right... it was because of the warranty.

My tcase is bad too and I am waiting for LR Knoxville to get one in. Should be any day now. I am getting one with a CDL for free even after being out of warranty for 10k :-)

No way Jim. At that dealership, instead of bending you over, they drag you around with hose clamps attached to your genitalia. Ouch.

Gee Adam that sounds like all the rest!! I thought there might be a loophole in warranty CDL cases, but in reality it is status quo.

Well I am not sure how I pulled it. I nicely talked with the manager after the clamp incident and apparently he was gone on the day I initially took it in and that he would not have let the clamps go out of the shop. So I dont know if he was feeling embrassed or something, but when the diagnosed the problem I was prepared to have to battle about getting it covered (I took it in at 49k for a vibe and they replaced the front dshaft but it never totally went away) under warranty. I asked him if we could work something out and he said, "well how about this.........nothing." I said ok. I decided not to haggle about getting my money for the clamps back at this point.

Talk to the service manager again.

When the auto hubs went bad on my ford ranger I got them to replace them with manuals, To do this I had to sigh a waiver that said that I wanted non original equipment manual hubs replaced instead of the automatic.

They had to heve it in wrighting that I wanted the parts warrenteed with different parts.

Just my 2 cents.

Maybe Paul Morgan will wade in here, but he had his Xfer case replaced on his 2000 DII and they gave him an '03 xfer case without CDL last fall. He's not happy. So Kristen may yet get what is currently available.

This is interesting in so much as I never heard of Transfer cases going bad like this before...so early in the vehicles life cycle..anyone have a sense that LR changed the design for the worst?

I can tell you that I just had to replace the rear output shaft seal on my '99 DII xfer case. I was shocked to hear the seal, felt washer, class 8 washer and nyllock nut was $106. I was eventually able to get it from Nathan at Discount Rover Parts for $89 after the initial shock. When it arrived I understood a little better because they actually supply the flange unit as well. Not the first time I've heard about leaking xfer cases.

Yeah, I got fucked.

D2 CDL T-case with 46K miles. It was leaking and I took the Pig into LR Cape Fear. They "fixed" the leak and when I got it home, it was leaking even more. So I took it back and they replaced it with a NON-CDL version. Looks like Matt is getting lucky and that is great!

For those of you who think it does not matter; guess what? It does matter. KVT equates CDL to control. Well without my CDL, I have lost an element of control over obstacles. Now I have to rely on ETC to kick and shake the Pig over obstacles, thus resulting in accelerated brake and spider wear. Randy can attest to the fact that my Warn 12k winch gets a lot more use now.

I really haven't decided what I am going to do yet. Buy a new T-case and lockers or say to hell with the D2 and all its computers and buy a D90 SW.

Paul I had the cash I would probably do the same thing you say in the last line, but I am a little soft and like the creature comforts...... that and I find it hard to swallow the fact that the Defenders bring so much money. Maybe if someone trades one on an Escalade(yeah right) I will try and cheap them and buy it from my manager. LR gives what is available as said above, my dealer told me the last one they got recently had the CDL so they were sure mine would to. I guess I am getting lucky. Mine was not leaking, but something inside has worn and caused a bad vibration.

shit, Paul....that sucks.

don't know if the part was just faulty or if it was operator error...the first time i ever took mine off-roading last fall i went charging up a hill in low too fast and my truck was not happy. but i never noticed that whining noise until the last couple of weeks (interestingly enough, right after its 7500 mile servicing). all i know is that the service tech at the dealer found metal shavings in the pan when they pulled it out.
