Anybody have any suggestions. My 99 Series I Disco has a problem. Occasionally I let off the gass at high speeds (65-70) the car starts to idle very rough(misfires). I put on the break and slow down. It begins to run fine and I am on my way. It is very intermitten. The check engine light came on so I took it to the dealer. They said it was the speed sensor? It was replaced at 280 bucks. I went home and had the same problem. Any suggestions? It does not happen once it warms up. It also happens almost always going up a large bridge 500 ft high. I live in an area that is 3ft above sea level.

IMHO, it is probably one of the following items:

1. Fuel Filter
2. Carbon build up on Exhaust Valves (search on using seafoam)
3. You may have some bad plug wires or plugs
4. Possible bad injector

Remember this is just my opinion.

Changed the fuel filter out with a NAPA. Maybe need to get the real deal. Changed sparks with the Champion version and NAPA wires. I need to check the injector but, I keep thinking it is a case of sticky valves. Thanks

Not to sound cheap, but most fuel filters are the same...

If you have already changed everything else (except the injector)

I would try seafoam next.

On the passenger side valve cover you will find a vacuum line going to the intake, remove from the valve cover side. Turn upside down for ease of use.

Pour slowly 1/3 of the can of seafoam into vacuum line while the disco is running.

Shut Disco down, wait 5 minutes.

Start Disco and stand clear of the smoke a smell.

This should help with the sticky valve issue.

The spark plugs need to be properly gapped at the tight end of the range. If its just the #6 cylinder then sounds like loose wire or perhaps bad ground or ignition coil. Check for vacuum leaks. Otherwise Joey hit the other stuff I would mention.

If you don't want to try it yourself, you need to find a service place that will do a proper diagnostic - in other words did the dealer prove the VSS was bad through testing or did they just assume because of the codes/symptons? Besides the electrical troubleshooting, sticky valves can usually be revealed using a vacuum guage. See http://www.centuryperformance.com/vacuum.asp.

Thanks all for the help. I have a D-90 3.9 litre and it runs fine. No problems after 70k. My Disco has been much more challenging. I put seafoam in the tank and crankcrase. But, will try the other method this weekend. This is a great website. Lots of good info.

Pardon my ignorance but what is seafoam, and where can I buy some?
I recently had the exact same thing happen. I was driving about 65-70 MPH and the DII just started vibrating like crazy. I thought it was because I had just had the tires rotated and they screwed something up. Then the check engine light came on. There were 3 codes cylinder 6 misfire, multiple cylinder misfire, and another cylinder 6 misfire. I changed the plugs to some Bosch Platinum + and haven't had a problem. That was only about a week ago though. I would like to try the seafoam thing just for safe keeping.
