Well I just got home with my new (to me) 95 D1, and I am like, wow, dude! For the past 4 years I have been mostly backroading (Washington State Forest Service roads, I've been on most of them!)an 87 Isuzu Trooper, but I finally ran out of duct tape and baling wire, and my local car lot had this Disco, and I thought, hey that's kinda cool. High miles (126k), but as far as I can tell EVERYTHING WORKS!, and I got it for $6,000us. Man this is some switch from a Trooper! Finding the 6cd changer under the driver's seat was what blew me away the most so far. I'm sure I'll have questions coming up, so I'm real glad to have found this board so early on in the game. Looks like lots of activity, thats great!

Anyway I ordered my eBay shop manual cd (the good one), and dang, I'm kind of excited!!!

Kip, it's fun. Just get ready to loosen up your wallet for a fun ride. You'll soon find out that's a love/hate relationship. Don't let anything discourage you though. It's a great vehicle.

Yeah, that six CD changer comes in handy particularly on bumpy roads/trails.

D1s rattle like a 60 year old barracks whore, so make sure you turn up the music to drown out out the squeaks and groans :-)

Welcome!
1. Avoid the dealer
2. Use the classefieds section (here and lrx.com). Look for people parting out
3. Buy some new tools
4. Don't park it in a white driveway
6. Get a "For Sale" sign and put a high price on it ($12,000 or something). Put it on the truck when you are pissed at it and think your life would be better without it. If someone is dumb enough to buy it for that price, pocket half of the money and buy a newer one for yourself once you realize driving anything else would just be dumb.

Welcome KIP... You'll find discoweb to be one of the most active and resourceful sites out there..

The RAVE CD you got is well worth the price you most likely paid...

I myself have 2 95 Discos... You'll find everyone here agrees the 95 is the best by far ...teeheehee..Now what are you plans for the truck?

Hello Kip!
You have just bought one of the most addictive vehicles out there... I am selling my MPI right now and already looking for a V8! Noone could talk me into looking for something else...I already have the disease! Offer your truck lots of care, comprehension, and love, and it will give you unforgetable moments!

And always remember:

IT'S NEVER OVER IN A LAND ROVER!

Thanks all. First of all you can't scare me with talk of oil leaks etc. I just got out of a Trooper (w/ 191k), remember?! Next, here's the funny story about that CD. When I test drove the D1, the radio (of course) was blinking CODE. My "dealer" (read used car salesman to the max) explained it to me and I said "well that's fine but who'd want to steal an AM/FM cassette?" He didn't say a word, I don't think he even knows it has a CD. So when I bought it I was ready with the VIN # and a call to LR in Seattle got me right up and running. Now since I don't have the $96 owner's manual I was sitting in the driveway playing with the buttons, and I see "Next" and "Sel" and I figured those out and there the radio says "CD" and music starts playing. Go figure!

As far as plans, I'm not a super offroader guy so I don't plan on any wild mods, but once I get things figured out I'll be wanting to carry camping gear, etc. There's a set of the bars that go across the two "handholds" on the roof on eBay right now. Those look interesting. (Boy there are times when you really miss a trunk!)

OK now for my initial question to the board: Since I don't have any manuals yet, what's the recommended oil weight to use in this 3.9l, and what about the transmission and diffs?

Thanks for the warm welcome. Looking forward to getting it out and locking it up!

Look under your back seat. There should be a black plastic bag that holds the jack handle(s). The roof bars may be in there as well (that's where mine were stored when I bought my '95).

Look before you bid on that set on Ebay.

gearbox takes atf as does the steering, diffs 90 weight, the swivels probably are grease now, if not they are 90 wt as well.
Grease the UJs on the driveshafts, and check the transfer box. check all those rubber hoses for the cooling system, and use british pacific and atlantic british as part sources for service items both are on the web

Kip,

Here's the tech question we (I) want to know...If you open your oil filler cap and look down in there, describe in ten (10) words or less what you see. Flashlight helpful.

Check out www.robisonservice.com. Navigate your way to the Land Rover Service pick. Lern it, Live it, etc.

There is a great group of Rover owners in the NW. Welcome.

kip it isn't as bad as it seems honest - I've owned two troopers in my lifetime one burnt down to the bone - suspected ruptured fuel line and the other (courtesy of my wife) ended up buried in my one of my compnies buildings.

All in all (touch wood, pray to who ever, sacrifices to the dark lord lucas of the land rover underworld) I haven't had any serious issues.

Besides fixing em is half the fun - o.k. time to visit the shrink again :-)

regards

Jeff

Boy you guys make a newb feel honored with all the attention in my first (and only so far) post. Now to answer some questions:

1. Unless there's a secret compartment underneath the rear seats, there's no crossbars - or jack handle. The jack/wedge is under the hood though.

2. Will look down into the oil filler hole ASAP. I can report that there were definite signs of gunk on the insides of the cap, as i checked this morning. I will be changing oil within the week, want to be systematic about things, to make sure I get everything properly lubed.

3. thanks for the Robinson Service link!

4. Opened the air filter box to find by far the dirtiest air filter I have ever seen. Not a good sign....

5. In three whole days of ownership, no oil leaks at all. Hurray! (for now)

6. Read a little on this board and understand more about the cdl. Took a trip to Olympia/Shelton (maybe 120 miles round trip), got in the dirt and locked it up. Seemed to do ok, no apparant horrendous loud noises or anything. General appearance/condition/workings of this car are very very good for what I paid. I'm guessing that this car has rarely been off the road (so far, that is).

Aside from a not very loud ticking sound (engine?, front right axle?), and a missing tailpipe my first impressions are that I'm in pretty good shape. Plenty of power, smooth shifting (4th is a little hard to find sometimes) electrical seems 99% ok, stereo buttons on the instrument panel are cool, and I'm really starting to like Coniston Green. So far so good.

Dont let anyone scare you; youve got a great vehicle. I also drive a 95 Disco and love it. Yes, its a little more labor intensive than my Land Cruiser but its a blast to drive and it is very capable off road. If you stay ahead of the preventative maintenance, you should find it reliable enough to take you to those far away, backcountry spots and home again. There are plenty of parts available on the internet. I also use our local dealer, Land Rover of San Antonio for genuine parts and some service. Land Rover S.A. is a strong partner with our local Rover club, Texas Rovers. Sooner or later youre probably going to need their expertise so you might as well get to know them now. Enjoy that Rover!

Kip, fold down your rear seats and lift them forward. You should see a long black vinyl bag there... look inside and you should have a tire iron, extension bars for the jack and the cross beams for you rook rack. there should also be a angled metal peice to help remove the roof rack bars

Sorry Sam but someone beat me to the crossbars. Maybe they're the ones that just sold on eBay for $90! I just heard from the guy I bought it from and he says his daughter has a jack, so there's a small chance that she's got the crossbars, too. No worries though, I'd rather have a good running rig than the crossbars, and so far that's looking good!

Kip, You may want to change all your fluids just so you can start fresh. Don't be afraid to take it off-road. I bought mine just for that and was suprised how well they do. And I'm comparing it to purpose built rock crawling jeeps that can barely go down the highway. My 2 cents

Cheers, Andy
