99 D2 started vibrating this week, feels like a driveshaft. 55k on the clock, any notorious problems to look for. Search came up dry & the rotoflex LOOKS ok. Remember seeing some info re: front shafts going & taking a bunch of stuff with them.

Thanks.

The only time i had vides on my '00 D2 was right before the front drive shaft blew apart. It progressivly got worse until it poped.

How many miles do they make it? Crawled under the truck & it looked ok but it was on all fours so I couldn't tell if there was any play in the joints. Are the joints replaceable?

Mine started doing that and I just greased up the u-joints and drive shaft. I would try that first if you haven't already. My 99 DII has 65K miles.

Look for rust on the bearing caps. When it breaks it will be expensive.

Replace now if it is even remotely suspect. Pull it and drive with diff lock while you send it to GBR to be rebuilt.

That's it!

I just pulled the shaft & one cup had siezed & shattered. If I drove another mile I think it would have come apart. I STRONGLY recommend taking the truck out of service as soon as you feel any vibration, this started on Thursday & I only put about 75 miles on the truck since then. They apparently don't give much warning.

Forward single U-joint on D2 front driveshaft has no zerk fittings to grease it. I had mine out last week to put in new front third and not only was the U-joint sloppy but also the yoke had some play in it. Rather than rebuild it I just called Bill at GBR and replaced it. As I had just intalled both thirds and rear driveshaft I figured I'd go for the full monty and do that too. I am far more confident that it won't grenade now.

Just the opposite of mine, the single has a zerk, the 2 in the double cardon don't. I cought it in time so I'm just going to have the joints replaced w/ greasable ones & install a zerk on the sipjoint & call it a day.

At what speeds did the vibrating occur?

Mine is nice and smooth, but it starts vibrating a lot around 80mph but I think it's due to tire balancing.

Tire misbalance vibes usually work themselves out by 70 mph......... I think most Discos probably start to vibrate by 80. Probably more wind etc. than anything else. Mine is ok until about 87 or so, which is fine because I dont drive that fast.

OK now I am worried... I noticed a vibration after getting the tires rotated a few weeks ago. I greased the u-joints and both driveshafts, but now it seems it may be more serious than that. I thought the greasing of the components seemed to help but now the vibration is back, although not as bad. How long can I drive it if I remove the front driveshaft and lock the CDL? Or can I drive it like that? I am assuming that is to be done in an extreme case like if a breakdown occurs when away from home.
The thing that may be different from this post is that the vibration seems to be coming from the rear. I don't feel it in the steering wheel, I feel it in the seat. I guess I just need to bite the bullet and have a professional look at it.

There shouldnt be a problem driving around without a front driveshaft.

Bob - How bad was the vibration when you noticed it? Was it like a wheel out of balance, or worse? Also, was it all the time or just when you were accelerating?

Beau,

I had an out of balance D/S on a landcruiser so I noticed it right away. Started ~ 40mph & was gone by 50 but after about 50 miles it progressed & vibrated @ all speeds. It feels almost the opposite of a tire. It's a high frequency, low amplitude vibration, as much a low growl as a vibration. I running w/ the Center diff locked, no problem other than the dash lighting up like a eff'in x-mas tree. Dropping the shaft @ the shop this A.M. will post results later.

Beau,

D1 or D2? what mileage? If it's ~ 100k & coming from the rear night be a rotoflex cplg.

Mine is a D2 with 65K miles. I thought about the rotoflex also. I am taking it by a trans shop after work today, the closest mechanic that works on D2's is 45 minutes away. Mine starts vibrating around 40 MPH, but no growl and it is pretty faint. I did have a mechanic in the area (non D2) who said that it didn't feel like a driveshaft, that it felt more like an unbalance tire or bent rim. He said if it was a driveshaft it would be vibrating alot more. The vibration is almost non-noticable around 75. Around 80 the vibration is like a pulsing vibration. Weird stuff...

Get it checked! sounds just like mine, started as a faint growl/roar @ 40mph but got progressivly worse. A badly out of balance tire will vibrate much worse than a driveshaft starting to go bad. Have them check the u-joints in the double cardon joint @ the t-case. Should have mine back from the d/s shop tomorrow, will let you know the results.

Bob,
You were right! Not that I didn't believe you. I finally got the front driveshaft out tonight. I drove the D2 around and it ran smooth as glass.
Did you get yours back in? I am going to order the conversion kit from GBR tomorrow and make the switch. What all did you end up having done to your driveshaft?

The shop had to order 1 u-joint, should be done this p.m. or first thing tomorrow. Bill e-mailed me w/ a quote of $250.00 + $35.00 shipping. The shop I'm using charged me $50.00 to balance a 2 joint Landcruiser shaft last year & did excellent work. I'll let you know the cost, you might save a Franklin shipping it to Charlotte instead of SLC.
