Ok here is my problem, I've dealing with a Service Engine light for the last 2 months or so on my 2000 DII. Today I finally decided to have it checked. They gave me this code. GEAR 4 RATIO INCORRECT P0734

Can somebody tell me what this means and how serious it is? I hear a noise comming out the gearshift but the car drives perfect...

Some people say that its the trans...I believe it..(I could be wrong) but can it get repaired or do I need a new trans????

Thanks in advance,

Gus.

Gus,

My 2003 D2 was throwing the Gear 4 Ratio Incorrect error as well. In my case, I had a small vacuum leak in the airbox. As Alan pointed out, the MAF sensor is also a frequent reason for this error being thrown.

Eugene, how did you discover that you had a leak? Did you have to take it to the dealer? How can I tell?

Gus,

I took the Disco into the dealership since I did not have an OBD2 reader available. The leak was apparent once the airbox was out of the engine compartment. One of the plastic tabs that secure the airbox was bent. At highway speeds, a vacuum leak would occur and trigger the Gear 4 Ratio Incorrect error.

One thing to note is that when I disconnected the battery to install a winch, the Service Engine light cleared itself. Since I had some trips coming up, I took the Disco into the dealership anyway.

I'd start by checking over your airbox. Verify that everything is sealed properly. While you are in there, check the MAF sensor. Some people have resolved the same issue by using electrical contact cleaner on the MAF sensor.

Hope this helps.

"One of the plastic tabs that secure the airbox was bent"

Very common. People are idiots when they swap air filters.
