Hello all,

I'm about to join the club of Disco ownership Monday when I pick up my new '99 Disco II (77k miles). I checked it out today and everything seems great with the truck although I'm a bit concerned about an odd noise coming from what seems to be the lower front of the engine (belt area) at idle. It's tough to describe in words but it sounds to my untrained ear like some type of bearing problem. The noise seems to be present only at idle and goes away with light throttle. The owner says the noise has always been there. They say the water pump was replaced in the last few months, and didn't seem to have any effect on the noise.

I don't expect anyone to be able to diagnose this over the web and I don't really have the experience or facilities to troubleshoot it myself yet, but I would like to get it looked at asap. I know that most of you here are DIY'ers but does anyone know of a decent mechanic in the Northern Virginia (Pr. William County) area? Has anyone had any good/bad experiences with Land Rover Alexandria's service dept?

The owner claims that the truck had all scheduled maintenances done at LR Hunt Valley (didn't save records), but when I called LRNA, they don't have a record of the truck getting the 60k service. I'm assuming that's a fairly major one so if it wasn't done I want to get that rectified right away.

I'd like to get my new baby treated well.

Thanks in advance

Joe Herrick

This guy has done some work on my truck and I have been very happy with everything he has done. I do not have his address handy but his name is Philip and his number is 1-703-327-2287

Check 4x4 connection and ask James Asti for advice. He will put you in contact with his LR mechanic.

British Classic Cars @ 703-327-2287
I used to work for these guys a while and they know about everything there is to know. Their main mechanic used to be a Rover guy for the South African Government ! Give em a shout !

>British Classic Cars<

I second that nomination. He has worked on my E-Type, both MGs and my Disco. Always a fair price and done right.

Joe, the serpentine belt tensioner bearings are notorious for becoming noisy. A fairly easy fix. As far as shops go, I personally recommend Trevor Griffiths at Treasured Motorcars outside of Baltimore. Admittedly, I am biased, but the employees there own 7 Rovers and off-road several of them!
