Well i finally got around today to jump in truck and check what GPS shows vs what speedometer does.

with 235x85x16 and 4.70 gears its like this - 25m/h on GPS - 30m/h on speedo and higher it goes, bigger difference is (like to get to 40m/h on GPS speedometer has to go above 50). I am thinking about pulling cluster out and putting new markings on :-)

Can someone of those who got 4.70 share their speedometer offsets? Just sort of curious.

I have 4.7s and had 32"s and 35" with them, however, my speedo never worked :-).

With 35"s on though, my GPS says I am doing right (compared to other lifted/geared/tired trucks that we check on the CB).

In other words, nothing concrete.

Hi guys,

I'm looking at re gearing. I can't make my mind up between the 4.1 and 4.7 gears.

I'll be changing to 235/85 tires at the same time.

I want to have an overall lower gearing to make downhill descents better. I also want to make sure that at 50mph the engine is not reving too much.

Either way I'm looking forward to a bit more power from the old 3.9.

Any ideas?

Dudley, with 4.7 you will get yourself truck that will be somewhere around 3K rpms to get to 60m/h. For me, living in mountains its not big deal, b/c most of roads here are limited to 50-65 - overwise you flying away of the edge to downhill :-) However if you live somewhere more flat - you might want to stick with 4.1, as it will be good compromise between on-road, off-road and will definetly give you better power response.

Another thing to consider 235x85 and 4.1 will give you (according to most posts) somewhat accurate speedo reading, whereas 235x85 and 4.7 seems to be off pretty big time on higher than about 20m/h speed. At least for me, and that is why i actually started thread :-)

Then again, with 4.7, 235x85 aired down truck is just walking across obstacles.

sergi,
im running 33's with 4.7s and your readings are about the same as mine. sucks on the flatland at speed, but crawls like a mofo.
worth the revs as the shitty motor is gutless and cant pull a hill unless its above 2500 rpm... kinda works out.

:-) I'll get some numbers after i will finish brakes (got to replace hooses, rotors and pads), alignment (after tie rods), engine flush (second attempt to get most of gunk out), transmission flush and tuning (shifts pretty weird lately) over weeked. Unless some serious disaster strikes (i.e FedEx will again decide to postpone delivery or my orders will end up in Denver instead of Durango. As they do pretty often with FedEx).

Joey - i am still running same tank of petrol as i put in mid November :-) How about that? :-)
