Yesterday, I was wheeling and while going uphill, I noticed a strong burnt smell. When I got to the top, I checked the fluids and they looked/smelled alright. On the way back down, and back home I didn't notice at all. What could have caused this? I was in high gear, no dif lock. It didn't seem like it was struggling too hard to get up.

Use low range when wheeling.
The smell was was your transmission fluid getting too hot.

Chris, does that advice apply to all off road wheeling? Even some loose surface fire road/beach typr stuff? Pardon the newbie question, but my sxperience in wheeling is to this point limited to a Toyota with a 5spd.

It is probably mud on the manifolds or elsewhere.

Porter - check ATF level. And how tight measuring stick seats in. If liquid above max (even slightly), then on steep hill it will run away, drip on manifolds and produce that burn smell.
Another thing can be mud/debris on exhaust lines - they do get VERY hot :-)

James - no. There are plenty of times when you will go in 4H, especially in mud.

I didn't think Lo would be a requirement with the Landy any more than with the Taco, but I want to keep my English Lady happy!

James it will be more, b/c Discovery is heavier than your late rig. Hence it needs more traction when go uphill and needs more engine braking when go downhill.

Sergei, Makes sense...thanks for the tip. I'll tell you, it's pretty strange to just drive right off the road and onto the beach and not have to get out, lock the hubs, shift into 4H and Then drive. Sure it doesn't sound like a lot of work, but...when it's raining...

I feel the weight difference, compounded by the fact that my truck came with 31" ATs and the Disco rides on M+S 255-65-16s.

It's just hot transmission fluid. I have to climb from sealevel to 1300ft up about a mile of road. I smell it everytime i get out of any of our cars in the driveway. It's what they were designed for.

Cheers

Jack

I was going uphill, maybe 500 yards or so and somewhat steep. There was a little bit of wheel slip but nothing it couldn't handle. I figured it was 1) either oil or something else running on the outside to something hot, or the transmission fluid burning. There was no mud, just dusty dirt. I'll try the same hill in low range, and see if I smell it again.
