My disco has and exaust manifold crack ( a couple big cracks actually) and I am going to replace. It looks fairly straight forward so I am going to attempt it myself. Does anyone have any suggestions on technique? What to use to loosen the existing bolts and gaskets? Any tricks to this installation and removal?

Ok, looks like nobody out there likes exaust manifolds. This is the passenger side manifold. My car has sounded progressivly worse and Im going to put a newmainifold on it. I hear that you have to soak the gasket and bolts really well. It looks as if it is fairly straight forward. Remove the bolts and disconnect it from the y pipe. Remove the old gaskets and install new and then replace the manifold. Is this it? Are there any items that need disconnecting?

pretty straightforward. use PB Blaster or other rust breaking lube and let it soak overnight. be careful when wrenching on the manifold bolts, you don't want to break one.

Jacob, sorry didn't notice this post, I just changed my Manifold out with headers. The passenger side would be a very simple change. Pretty straight forward with little issue that I could think of. My bolts came right out with no issue '97 Disco with close to 100k. Just remember to get a new downpipe gasket as well. Mine was cracked (passenger side) and the down pipe was very loose, which may have added to the crack issue.

If you have any questions, let me know.

Where is a good source for the manifold. My passenger side is cracked most likely past the point of welding. British Atlantic lists a price that just hurts, and a kit for the repair that makes my heart palpitate. Any other sources that I might consider?

http://www.rovercannibal.com/

Good supplier of used rover parts. I purchased a used manifold for $90. Hopefully Ill get a few miles before it cracks. My vehicle is just outside the recall. I think it sucks that allmost all rovers have this problem and LR wont take care or it.

Good tip from Jake on the PB Blaster...that stuff rules the known universe. Don't breathe the fumes, though.

My question is how long are the replacement manifolds lasting? My right manifold was replaced at 3 years and now the left one has a crack in it so it makes me wonder if I should expect my manifolds to go every 3 years or so or is there actually a fix for this? My last truck was 12 years old and I never had to replace an exhaust manifold so this is a bit annoying.

It is not a recall, it is a service Campgaign.... Same as what you would do...look yep I have a cracked exhuast, under warrenty (not me) then that will be $245 for the manifold and 3 hours labor at $80 a hour.

Or you can just call D.A.P. or any number of Aftermarket places and get one for under $200.

Just me .0001 cents worth (my advise isn't worth much)

I've already checked and my truck doesn't fall under the service campaign so it's all on my own dime. Think I'll start calling around for manifolds.

wasn't there a post a while back on exhaust manifolds? i think that there were a few poeple who really argued strongly against getting a used manifold for 2 reasons. 1 is since they are all so prone to cracking the used one is likely to crack relatively soon. and second a used manifold has a strong chance of being warped. this is not my from my knowledge base i just remember reading it a few months back.

while we are talking manifolds i have a question to throw in to. i just finished adding the seafoam deep creep and during the "great smoke out "step of the process i noticed that the smooke was flooding out of the flange between the passenger side manifold and the down pipe. i am assuming a new gasket is in order. i have never changed one before. i had replaced a few missing studs from the downpipe flange and probably shoulda went ahead and pt in a new gasket at the same time. coulda , shoulda, woulda. right?

if anyone can tell me what involved in replacing the gasket thaat would help. do i need to remove the whole downpipe? do i need high temp gasket sealant? if so what kind?

First thing I would do is make sure that the bolts are tight.

If tight, then spray with alot of PB Blaster or the bolts/studs will break.

Unbolt, slide new gasket in, rebolt.

Job complete in about 10 minutes unless a bolt/stud breaks, then in that case (scream, holler and yell) then start taking off the manifold to remove the broken stud and then reinstall.

Does anyone have the actual range of vehicle VIN numbers covered under this "Service Campaign"? As I understand it covers certain 97 and 98 model Disco I's, so some "VA" and "WA" serial numbers I guess. I have not received any letter from Land Rover myself.
