I've been putting up with the drip of the steering box on my 97 Disco, but it is getting worse. Would like any thoughts on replacing the box myself. How difficult? Special tools? Problems encountered. Have reviewed LR Workshop Manual, seems fairly straight forward. How likely is it to screw up alingment. Manual says to remove steering wheel? Overkill? Thanks

Jerre, you sure it's dripping from the steering box? I was under my disco this weekend and I found the leak to be where the resevior and the tube meets. Initially I too thought I would have to swap out my steering box... take a close look at that joint

you need a good pitman arm puller. I recommend the Snap On puller. I wouldn't pull the steering wheel, just secure it so it doesn't turn, if it turns too far you'll damage the spiral casette. Someone replced my box shortly before I bought it and didn't lock the wheel down. Now my cruise is inop and the SRS light is on. Like Sam says check the hoses too.

I have replaced hoses that were previous leaks, but now I am afraid I am down to seals. I cleaned the area with degreaser and found the leak to be where the steering column meets up with the box. Thanks for the input.

You need to replace the steering box. If someone tries to sell you a reseal make sure they replace the teflon seals on the input shaft, they are sold seperate from the reseal kit, otherwise buy a remanufactured unit.
