I have just tested my 96 D1 offroad in a two week trip across the Egyptian eastern desert after having modified the differentials to a 4.1 ratio with a Detroit Locker in the rear and 265/75R16 Goodyear MTR's on the wheels and offcourse a 3" HD OME lift. The performance of the Discovery is really great after these modifications and nothing stops it from moving, however I have noticed only one problem during the whole trip. When driving through loose sand and over sanddunes, even at a rpm not higher than 2000-2500 rpm the engine temperature rises very fast towards the red line and I need to stop the vehicle to let it cool down and the ambient temperature was not higher than 30 degrees Centigrade . I think this is due to the regearing of the differentials and the bigger wheels. Is there a means to improve the engine cooling by changing the fan or by mounting an aftermarket higher flow waterpump or by maybe adding a 2nd engine oil-cooler. I would appreciate any suggestions if anyone has faced the same problem especially that even in the US you have some very high summer temperatures.

nope, it`s not the gears or tires. mine does the same, it`s your radiator.

why do you have mud terrains in the eastern sahara...east exgypt? doesnt the terrain call for a tire that perfoms better in sand??? by the way i may be coming to egypt in the near future. we should hook up and venture into lybia via rover

Blake: Do you mean that I can install a larger radiator or that my radiator is blocked.

Eduardo: Do you visit Egypt often? I have done the western desert a few times upto to the Libyan borders and also to the very south to the Sudanese borders and around Lake Nasser and the Gilf El Kebir area. Let me know when you are coming to Cairo and I will organize this trip and let me know where you want to go.
You are ofcourse right about the MTR's regarding sand. I was trying this set in the eastern desert because in many ares the terrain is very rocky and these Good Year MTR's have extra strong sidewalls and before I was tearing many of my sand tires when passing through rocky areas. Do you know of any sand tires with very strong sidewalls?

I remember a month or so back reading about "gulf-spec" discos that had a larger capacity radiator. After a certain year, something like all discos or all US discos were gulr-spec.

Try a search and see what happens. If someone is parting out a gulf-spec disco, you might be able to get an inexpensive radiator.

Or maybe I misunderstood the whole gulf-spec thing... I was a brand-new member at the time the discussion was going on.

gulf spec radiator is a different beast altogether. if Tarek has the gulf spec and is having these problems then something is wrong with the rad. i'm not sure if you can retrofit a gulf spec rad ( i believe it's a lot wider and deeper) but that would be a really cool addition.

for a strong sidewall sand tire try a BFG A/T in load range E.

radiator may be blocked. aluminum block motors seem to have a lot of gunk in the water passages. also look at the thermostat and the water pump and drive belt.

tarek, i used to travel to morocco quite a bit. at the time it was the best way to enter into algeria. I lived out of a 109 for a few months in the desert surfing and exploring. it was a great adventure.

i would really enjoy going into the sudan area. have you ventured into the khartoum area?

yes its true there are rocky areas all over the west side of the sahara...it is very reminiscent of areas that i have been too in baja california.

i would be very interested in setting something up with you in the future.

i have yet visit egypt/cairo, but currently i have a few friends who are doing some work there.

im planning something there in the next six months or so. if you dont mind lets keep in touch via email and eventually conect in cairo.
if you have any photos of your previous trips please send them my way...also journal entries and or maps....

take care and talk to you soon.
on the tires i will do some investigative work on my end. its just a matter of emailing some desert rat friends...cheers
