Just noticed an excess of smoke (white) and water coming from my exhaust. Also, the tip of my tailpipe is black.
What is causing this and how do I fix it?

Anybody...??? Mine is not a billow of white smoke but the tip of the tail pipe is black.. I checked for leaks no leaks(as far as the coolant leaking into the engine) .. I just had new cats installed..and when we installed them the rover blew LOTS of white smoke but it disipated after it ran for awhile.. Any clues?? THANKS AS ALWAYS!!

White smoke is usually a sign of water in the combustion chamber (i.e., blown head gasket). It's actually condensation, not smoke. If this is the case you most likely will be losing engine coolant at some rate - though it might be slowly. White smoke from a blown head gasket usually won't disipate, but instead continues and progressively gets worse in most cases. It might stop/disipate if the leak is minor and the mornings are cold and temps warm up during the day (will show up more in colder weather).

The black ring around the tailpipe is common on the discos. It's a build up of sut. The 4.0 tends to run a little rich on fuel. Seems to get worse with more mileage. Probably because of more blow-by at higher mileage and because O2 sensors are not as efficient at high miles. You can clean it off with a rag and wire brush, but it will soon be back. It's unsightly, but nothing to worry about.

I always thought the black "dust" that collected was carbon deposits from incomplete combustion or combustion by-products.

Shane - yep, that's what sut is - incomplete combustion and combustion by-products. The same for blow-by (unburned oil from the crank case via worn rings, valve guides, etc.) Inefficient O2 sensors at high miles tend to let the engine run richer which also = incomplete combustion.

David - Thank you! You really know your stuff!! OK- so my o2 sensors are still having issues and my check engine light is forever on! The 02 sensors are new but I am getting a few codes directly related to my upstream sensors. I have tried to monitor the smoke or condensation and it is not always there (comes and goes).. A blown head gasket?? EKK! I am sure the labor on that alone is insane! I am not losing coolant though( I have been watching that closely). Thanks to Sergei! However the last time I changed my oil I noticed there were little water droplets in the oil cap...sorta like condensation. My head hurts just thinking about it!!

It's normal for it to emit some condensaton & liquid water if it's cold outside, usually subsides as the motor warms up.

i have the same problem with 95 disco..black soot around the tail pipe..im worried because i recently purchased new exhaust from nrp including cats and i dont want them to prematuraly die on me because of excess carbon. is this possibe? also i reused old 02 sensors since they where purchased from crabtree. could this be the problem..weak aftermarket O2 sensors?

Melissa - can you describe the conditions when you see the white smoke? Is it only when the engine is cold? Only on cold mornings? Only when you start up at a stop light? Etc.... It's hard to diagnose these things without knowing some history and what the patterns are. If you don't know that's okay - just start watching for a pattern from here on out.

Other questions: Did you change all the 02/lambda sensors (there are 4)? How long have you been watching the coolant level (it could be a minor leak)? Have you noticed the temp guage fluctuating or indicating overheating? Does the smoke have any bluish tint to it? OK, let's go from there.

Yes, a head gasket repair is expensive because of the labor involved. That doesn't mean you have to have it done by a LR dealer. Any competent mechanic can do this fix and the parts are not expensive. The downside, is if a head gasket is blown or leaking it has to be fixed or the engine will overheat and ultimately be ruined (very expensive). But, don't panic at this point. It could be a number of other things that are minor probs. Just keep your eye on the temp guage.

David- Just as Edurado, I changed the lambda sensors upstream both of them from Nathan Crabtree(NTK). I never changed the downstream sensors--No code has been pulled yet indicating that the 02 downstream sensors are bad or need changing.
If I recall bluish tint = VALVE JOB ? No blue tint yet. I check the fluids every time I fuel up, which we all know is often with the Disco. And the fluids remain @ the same level. I just ran out the truck--started no smoke. And the car to my knowledge has never overheated(guage does not go up and down at all-yet).. I just had it serviced about 5K miles ago (LR Austin)..And ever since the 60 k mile service the Rover has been acting up. THANKS AGAIN!!! Melissa

Melissa - Bluish smoke = burning oil, which can be worn valve guides, rings, and a lot of other nasty things. It sounds like the smoking is nothing serious (don't hold me liable for that comment). Maybe the weather was cold outside when you noticed the smoke. This will cause condensation until the exhaust system warms up (see Bob Shinn above). Maybe LR Austin dropped a cigarette butt in the exhaust when they did your O2's and service (or a bag of weed, this is Austin). Are you in my neighborhood (Austin)?

Melissa - I'm not really planning on SCARR, but would be a blast I'm sure. I think it's being held near Longview this year. They've got some really slick, sticky, red clay in that area ... so be careful. I got a 3/4 ton 4wd Suburban stuck out in the red mud out there once. Had to crawl out the window. You know you're stuck when the top of a Suburban is chest high and you can look straight across and see your buddy. :-) Thank god we had a winch and lots of big trees! Guess that's what I get for driving a chevy (was not mine!).

Hey Mel - hope you know I'm just kidding. I don't want this to get into a Red River shootout. You're a Roverchic so you must be all right. And before I get every Okie coming down on me, I think you're all OK. :-) BTW, which coach? I'm not a UT/T-sip fan.

Dav- All in good fun! I am only kidding of course! Upon graduation I shall become a legal resident of TX and will be gainfully employed somewhere in Big D. However, I will continue to drive around with the horns proudly "tucked"... :-)

Lower & Mid Greenville are cool. You should try the Barley House & The Old Monk off of Knox Henderson exit. About a block east of 75. Barley House on weekends is packed with some cool bands, Old Monk is more laid back Irish Bar. Their right across the street from one another. Also on the same exit, but west of 75, try Chuy's across from Z Gallerie & Crate & Barrell. Excellent tex/mex, also if you like Italian, you should try Patrizio's in Highland Park Villiage. Upscale rest., but very reasonable prices. $9 a plate, best in Dallas IMO. Ever go to Deep Ellum? West End has some cool hideway bars for being a tourist trap.

I can not wait to move to Dallas! I hope I do not party my career away (only kidding of course). :-) Deep Ellum is ok but a little dirty .. I think I heard Jay Quinn Band @ Barley House one weekend? Thanks for the info!
