Well, I just got done spend 7 hours (with a mechanic) installing my new headers.

The subject says it all when I say it was not a fun or easy job. Passenger side went fairly easy once we removed the Starter and the heat shield.

Driver side on the other hand was not fun at all, I was told by Bill Rhodes that the only issue was the steering linkage. Well this is not the only issue, you have a sensor on the drivers side that gets in the way, I had to mod the headers to fit around the sensor.

Then there is the issue of fitting the Cats.... well lets just say I will not post those pics email me off line if you need them :-(

I also took alot of photo's, and don't want to post them all, with explinations, so I will just show a couple.

The finished product is a very nice sounding Disco that seems (seat of pants-o-meter) to run much better. Only time will tell if this fun as excitement was worth the money.

Joey

Matt, I got them from www.jet-hot.com (headman headers part# 39800)

Total cost with shipping = $346.00

If you don't care about the ceramic coating, they are $109.00 from Summit Racing.

Now what you REALLY need are some hooker's. 4into one side pipes. That's what's goin on the '73 vette. I think i'll wait and see if you have any ill effects before i put new headers on the discovery. They do look very cool though, cheap too.

Cheers

Jack

The one apealing thing about the headers is that you may be able to get them to seal up (I stress MAY). The stock pipes are for shit....

Joey, Never done headers on a Disco. I have on other vehicles. Do yourself a favor and get some Stage8 locking header bolts. Expensive at $2.75 each, but worth more. You can put them on and forget them, or forever be tightening conventional header bolts. Hex keyed bolt heads make installing them a little easier. I'm sure some of the other Mustang/Disco owners on the board will back me up on this one. WWW.stage8.com

Its the collectors that are the issue. The mustang boys dont have that issue because they have a nice flange there

are these headers specifically for discos or are they universal fit that happen to work?

The header I have are for Range Rovers 4.0 so with minimal work it fits the Disco.

Loud, well since I have the Flowmaster 40 series on my Disco, I would say it was a little louder, but not Chevy 350 glass pack loud.

Chuck - interesting info on the header bolts, but which one to use on a Disco?

As far as perfomance goes, I doubt my Disco will ever see a Dino, but I will let you know of any issues that may come up. I will say that I am looking at some O2 Simulators for issues that I know may be poping up on the dash in the near future... :-)

If anyone has anything else to add, let me know or ask, and I will be glad to assist in any way that I can.

Joey, Not sure which ones you would need. I do know if you call them, they have bolts for all kinds of applications. One of those "Call for custom applications" deals. You might spend a little more for their custom mades.
I have always had a problem with the bolts slowly working loose on the exhaust port flange myself. These have been the only ones that seem to stay torqued. I believe it has something to do with differing heat expansion and contraction rates of the metals involved.

I wouldn't bother with plain-steel headers. They will probably rust out in 2 years and you will be faced with the hassle of installing a new set or re-installing your old manifolds. After going through 3 sets of Headman headers on my old jeep I concluded they were not worth the effort or expense.

the jet hot coating will keep them rust free for a very long time. I have some jet-hot coated(inside and out) Stans headers on my scout and they have been rust free for more then a decade.

they also are running thier first set of gaskets still thanks to the Stage8 clips/bolts.

as far as the collector gaskets go nothing but nothing seals and works like percy's they are made of super soft rust free aluminum and they really work.

Headers are a love hate thing I would love some custom tri-y headers for a disco. and as Kyle may recall I even thought about having Stan the header man build me some.

Just called Jet-Hot and they told me they will recoat my header one time free in the first 3 years. I even asked the guy and said "I had to modify these headers to fit (heating and bending one pipe, will you still recoat for free" he basically said yes they will recoat no matter what one time free.... Now I just need to schedule some down time for the Disco (probably when something else happens or I am upgrading) and send them back to be recoated.

Now that is what I call customer service.

I even told him that I sprayed the heated modified part with high temp paint, he said no problem that should keep them from rusting till you send them in.

Another update, not that anyone probably cares :-) I drove my Disco up a winding road to Parkersburg WV about an hour drive away, then back via the interstate, both were typical WV roads - a lot of hills and curvy.

Anyway to make a long story short, Normally where the Disco would drop 8 or 10 miles per hour( or shift to 3rd gear) driving up these hills, I dropped maybe 2 or 3 and did not need to shift. I also just seemed to have more get up and go at highway speeds. (245-75-16 tires and OME 2" lift)

I can't say much for fuel economy yet do to the grin from ear to ear when I punch it from a dead stop and everyone looks to see what is making that noise... :-)

I hope to have some fuel economy updates with in the next week or so.

I also noticed an extreme drop in under hood heat temp. I can now drive for 30 minutes and open the hood and almost touch the headers befor I feel the heat off the engine.
