howdy,
I am trying to resolve a vibration issue. Bought a 96 disco w/ 85k. At about 95k she began to vibrate on interstate above 70 mph, especially going uphill. I am thinking that i need to upgrade to the u-joint driveshaft from the rotoflex type. However, I am not sure if the truck has been lifted or not.? The truck has 265/75/16 tires that do not rub anywhere or anytime. There has been no apparent body trimming. Hence I am thinking that the vehicle has had a lift of some degree but do not know how to check for sure. If lifted, I will probably need to change to the u-joint type to get rid of the vibration. If no lift can just replace rotoflex (which is now cracked in 4 spots) for much cheaper! Or I could just be completely wrong about the cause of the vibrations all together! Here is what i have done recently, New tires (same size that was on it when i got it), trans flush and filter change, changed all the oils in drive train, sea foam (thinking could be valve issue-didnt help, but engine is smoother and quieter), fuel pump and filter. I just checked all 3 u joints and they are fine (atleast no play in them) however, play in front and rear drive shafts (ring and pinion going out?? I dont know) and finally hard shifting especially 3rd and 4th and especially under load..!! Good lord i think i just developed carporal tunnel! Anyway what do you guys think??

Anthony if your running 265s with no rubbing or trimming may have taller springs. Call EE or another rep rover place they may give you many hints. don't know why you haven't got more replies form d-web most of theses guys have been through it and have good advice. I am still running a roto flex on my 95 with a 2" lift and 245s with no vibrations. but the roto flex is in good shape. If I go higher I will switch to a u-joint.

Cheers Andy

With 1.5" lift you are usually good with roto, for 20k miles or so if you drive nice, Less if you don't! Vibe could be in a u-joint, Grease them up really good, as well as spline on drive shafts, I use marine grade grease for these items, and with (knock on wood) have 108k on origional drive train!
Good luck!
Peter.

what kind of tyres? i have found that a cheeper tyre will cause viberations! especially at speed. cheeper tyres and blem tyres are and can be out of round. shaving the tyre will rid it of the lumps for now. are they mud tyres? matbe a bent rim? also some shops have calibration issues with their ballancing machines. maybe try putting the front tyres on the back and back on the front.

i had a similar issue with a 99 (post major suspension mod)
pinion angle checked and moved, drive shaft re-balanced, bushings replaced and it ended up being the right front tire (F-in' Trxus). vib would come on about 72, regardless of engine rpm. pissed me right of when we found it, brand new tires to boot.

oh, and don't worry about the gear set slop. typical rover, lots of backlash.

thanks guys,
i dont think it could be the tires, i just replaced my michelins with some yokohamas and vibe happend the same with both sets. if it were a bent rim, wouldnt it vibe all the time? my vibe comes and goes. sometimes can drive at 70 and no vibe, other times vibe all to hell. if cruising at 70 will usually be fine until hit a hill and will start to vibrate worsening as reaching top! sometimes will do it on flat ground! the vibration feels more like a misfire, whole car shakes (but no powerloss, can still accelerate normally just increases vibe) but it does not throw a code. i have tried to keep the vibe going for as long as i can to see if it will throw a code but it does not. i am convinced it is not valves (as no code and no powerloss) and that it is in drive train. Checked and greased u-joints, they dont have any play. the rotoflex has cracks but i would think that if it were throwing drive shaft out of whack it would do it at a given speed no matter what...am i wrong about this? could rotoflex cause intermittent vibes? how can i check and what should i check on the transfer case? mabe somekind of bering going out, i can see how a bering could cause intermittent vibes but dont know what to check! i am student and tight on the stuff that drives us (money not p*$$y) so i am trying to find cause BEFORE replacing unnecessary parts! this is driving me nuts! any thoughts will be explored!
thanks

maybe prop shafts out of phase with each other? or worn slip yokes. transfer case bearings?

If your rotoflex is cracked, replace that. It needs to be done and it's a start. They will cause vibrations that will vary under differing loads

Anthony, it might not be the driveline. I recently had this problem going up hills and it turned out to be the TPS and a bad plug.

Go over to Autozone and have them plug in their OBDII reader and see what codes you're getting.
The connector on your 96 is on the driver side close to the accelerator pedal.

I bet you if you drive up a hill and floor it (letting it downshift) the vibe goes away... try that first.

BTW mine is a 96 also with a new rotoflex. If you don't plan on going off-road I would keep the rotoflex.

Hope this helps.

Anthony,

I am no expert, but from my own experience, I would advise you not to assume that the vibration is being casued by only one problem. It might be several all at once.

I have a 93 200Tdi that had been 'let go' for the 18 months before I bought it. She has a similarly annoying vibration, which culminated with an intermittent "death wobble" (severe feedback through the steering wheel). This I ascribed to the swivel pin preload, and after doing the adjustment the death wobble subsided, but the vibration remained. I then renewed the bushes in the panhard rod, and again things have improved, but its still not gone away. Like you, I now think that my vibe is in the drive train, but am not sure what precisely to do next! Do you have any noise associated with the vibe?

I now notice that I have 2 distinct whines, though neither is loud. A high pitched one that sounds like the gearboox (manual), but seems to come from further forward, and a lower pitched whine that goes away upon load and the overun, but which is present when applying just enough power to maintain speed.

Sorry to but in on you thread, Anthony, but if anyone has any suggestions for me, I'd appreciate it, too!

Anthony, if you have cracks in the Rotoflex, replace it or upgrade to a ujoint driveshaft. I had a 2" lift w/ rotoflex. After an offroading trip, I got a terrible vibration at 72 mph.

If you want to confirm that its the rotoflex, just take the driveshaft off, lock the difflock and take it for a spin.

uh oh, Anthony doesn't know how to lock his CDL, tsk, tsk. If what you said about your rotoflex being CRACKED, for christ sake change it out with a new one, $105 and a couplo hours, hardest part is the little bushing thing in the end of the shaft and its really what keeps the shaft in alignment. I just did mine because of a constant vibe that was worse when the disco had a load in the cargo. BLAh, blah, new roto in and its like a new truck. The CDL lock is up on top of the transfer case and is a pain to get to, it allows you to drive with only one shaft(or good old time 4wd)

Dave, the CDl on a 96 Disco has a shifter not like the DIIs...

Anthony, I replaced my rotoflex for $80 (Nathan @ Discount rovers) and it did not fix my vibration. My roto had some cracks in it but not enough to make it vibe. Some other folks on this board have had the same problem with DI w/o the rotoflex and it turned out to be the TPS.

Does your check engine light work? Is it on?

Just a thought.

tps?
where is it, what does it do and how to check it?
check engine light works and threw codes p0301 (misfire cyl.1) and p1316 (ignition system or misfire). was going 50mph when happened, car shook for 5 sec. and ce came on. reset light and car is running a little rough still but ce has not come back on. rev it up a little and let off gas and can hear it sputter out exhaust.

however, i think that this is a seperate issue as the vibe this thread is about. has been going on and slowly worsening for a month. also, it will shake at hwy speeds around 70 ,intermittently, until you slow down or let off gas and reapply a few times..But, DOES NOT throw a code...ever!

i do have a whine at low speeds that sounds like coming from the gearbox but it goes away when you speed up a bit! what kind of vibrations are you getting and at what speeds and etc..(describe them to me)

Anthony, if the vide is still there when you down shift then I don't think it's the TPS or a bad plug but I would try getting rid of the p1316 code first. I had a code p1317 and it was a bad plug on cyl 2 (right hand - bank 1).

I forgot to mention that I run 265/75s also with a OME HD lift and I rub in the rear fenders when flexed.

Get the roto from Nathan (www.discountrovers.com) he has the best price on it.

The TPS is located right on the front of the plenum (right next to the stepper motor). Check out this site https://store.tolosatech.com/xks_lr/merchant.ihtml?id=754&step=2 it's #15-18

If you remove the rear driveshaft and lock the transfer case in Hi you can drive at higher speeds on the road because you disconnected the rear driveshaft. If you didn't disconnect it and you were locked on the highway then you would f' up the transfer case/transmission. Am I right guys?

Dave, I'm sure you were thinking of the DIIs.. actually, I do need help regrouting the shower :-)

Anthony, if there is a vibe at ~70 mph and you have a cracked rotoflex, I'd say there's a very good chance the rotoflex is causing the problem. Now, take the driveshaft off, lock the cdl and drive to truck at 70mph and see if the vibe is still there.

Enough of the talk about the problem, now get under the truck and get your hands dirty.
