I replaced the serpentine belt on my '99 D1 some 4 months ago. Since the past month I've noticed a distinct whine from the belt assembly. I thought I had accidently loosened the bolt securing the tensioner but not the case. On revving the engine, the tensioner & pulley assembly toggles up & down and this seems to create the high pitched noise. Is there a way to fix this other than replacing the tensioner? Is it that the bearings may have gone bad in tensioner? If so, is there some compound (like silicon grease or something) available to lessen the friction/noise? I'd really appreciate some insight into this problem. |

To me it definitely sounds as if the bearings in your idler pulley/tensioner have gone bad. Don't let this go as you could be stranded on the side of the interstate in a downpour (guess how I know?) It's fairly easy to remove, and replace. I simply put a complete new part on there. However, I do believe that as long as you haven't let it go too far that you can replace just the bearings. Do a search here on DWEB but I'm pretty sure on that one. |

On UK spec Discos the belt tensioner is slightly missaligned causing this squeak. Of you put a thinish washer behind the tensioner body at 9 O'clock it will square it up. Thats position 9 O'clock not do it at 9 O'clock, just incase you were wondering. Cheers wizard |

Napa, Discount Auto Parts, etc.. will carry the replacement, just replaced mine with a new idler bearing as well. |

"Is it that the bearings may have gone bad in tensioner?" If it's bearings that's likely the culprit. But, don't forget to check other pulley bearings too (power steering pump, water pump, etc.). |

Ok guys, I am stumped again. I did get the replacement part from Napa, removed the pulley and yes the old bearing has a grinding noise when spun. Noticed there's a metal ring around the pulley. So how do I remove the old bearing? Could somebody please let me know. -- Thx |
