Well i finally ponied up money to get ignition system properly renewed - got Magnecor 8mm wires and 4+ platinum Bosh plugs. If you havent done that mod - do it. Its totally worth it! What a HUGE difference did it make for me truck. I am getting so much better response from throttling, truck sound like truck (as in - damn, i can hear it again at idle, and it vibrates a bit as most of old V8 do. At least ones i been sitting it), tach now sits at idle without them quirky jumps. Also shifting points, to much of my surprize seems to adjust a bit (went higher), but then i disconnected battery while was working on truck, so it can be something to watch later on, as i presume ECU ought to get used to new ignition. One unplesant thing was to find totally nasty smell (sulfuric kind) going off for a little while. I guess there was some crap in valves/cylinders that finally got thrown away. Now i just need to get them brakes done, flush oils again and Disco is ready to beat trails for real Whohooo.. |

Sergei, I did the same setup on my Rangie and what a difference!! Only problem is that it lasted a short time.... a few months later I started having problems with the plugs and had to go back to the stock plugs. I hope this is an isolated problem with my RR ..... I hope you don't have the same issue. Good luck, John |

Most likely fouled plugs. Nathan swore me off Bosch plugs because of that very reason. He says they foul very quickly. |

Ok, i managed to mess up two wires (basically swapped them). *Sighs* That was entire cause of this rough running. However i took boshes out for one day, so i can see how truck runs with old splitfire ones, but with new wires, and then compare them with boshes. |

So besides the Bosch, what are the recommended plugs to use? The stock Champions? |

Sergei, exactly what Steve said.... after a few months the plugs went bad. BTW, I also messed up a few wires. I just sent them back to Magnecore and they fixed for free. Sven, I'm back to stock and they are fine. |

I'm using NGKs right now in both 4.0 D1s. Gapped at .035" (as per Nathan). NGK BPR5EY (NAPA #1233) ~ $15.16 + tax per set.

Hmm.. well i am wandering why they dropping dead after such a short time (Bosch plugs that is). Getting too much deposits on them and start misfire? What plugs looked like? |

Sergei, my first and last set of Bosch Platinum 4s went to the trash can after a week in my old jeep. They have a tiny center electrode - which means they are only suitable for very clean-running, and hot-running, engine. In my experience, nothing beat Champion Truck plugs - but it doesn't sound as fancy as Platinums

So i was right - deposits ruining them. And chances of me engine being clean at 130+K are pretty much zilch. I didnt much care for platinum, just was wandering to try some new stuff, b/c of all them contradicting opinions on those plugs. Guess i will just put mine (after cleaning) into spare trail parts bin. |

Not necessarily - I've pulled the spark plugs from my Disco at 110kmi (for the 1st time since we bought it with 40kmi), and they were very clean - cleaner than on any other vehicle of that age. The electrodes were somewhat burned out, but there were no noticeable carbon deposits or anything. Replaced them with Champions, put 35k more since, and never looked at them yet. |

Even though this is Jeep related, I have had champions, Bosch 4+, NGKs and splitfires NGK is by the best plug. Champions wore out, splitfires ran weird and Bosch gave me huge idle problems and got deposits quickly. NGK is what I run now and I am about to try their Iridium plug. Justin |

NGK are best for japanese cars...just as bosch work best in german cars, motorcraft best in fords, and autolite in gm vehicles...you can say thats crazy, but ive read several studies on the topic |

A few years ago, I installed Magnecor 8mm wires and 4+ platinum Bosh plugs on my 1995 Range Rover Classic (3.9 V-8, with distributor, OBD-I) and also on my wife's 1998 Dicovery LE7, (4.0 V-8, with coil pack, OBD-II). My Range Rover ran great for 6 months, before the 4+ platinum Bosh plugs went away. I went back to the stock Champions. Previously, I have also tried Autolite double platinum, Split-Fire, and Bosch platinum. The stock Champions have been very reliable, and they give good service life too. My wife's Discovery "check engine" light came on within the first hour. Got a code reader and misfire was the reason. Put in the stock Champions and have had no problems. I talked with Eddie at West Coast Rovers, and he told me that using spark plugs other than the stock Champions with the OBD-II system on the 4.0 V-8, as well as the 4.6 V-8, causes misfires. He said tha OBD-II is "more" sensitive than OBD-I. |

Anyone have the model number for the so called Stock Champions? for 4.0 v8 in DII. How about for '95 RRC 4.2? |
