Hey guys, I havnt been here for a while, but I'm having some issues I cant pinpoint and I really need your help. I have a 95 Discovery, Automatic V8, blah blah, 160k miles. I'm having a pretty rough driving issue with it, and I dont know if its the transmission or the engine, but I'm really thinking its the engine. Every time I start the engine cold, the car makes a pretty rough knock and runs poorly with general driving / accelleration. It improves gradually as the engine warms, and is "back to normal" after about 10 minutes. I generally run about 6 qts of 10W-40 with 1 quart of lucas oil stabilizer when I change my oil, about every 2-3k miles. Another related problem is while driving, the engine surges, or rather loses power very briefly without a drop in RPMs, about every 15 seconds. The best way to describe the surge feeling is that its the same feeling in your gut as you get when you drive over a bump in the road, or on a rough road, how your stomach kinda moves back. I recently installed 2 brand new catalytic converters and the exhaust is really sounding loud, and unhealthy. I know this is a vague description, but I think it's a start, does anyone have any suggestions based upon what I've said? FYI I've recently installed: -New Fuel Pump, Fuel Pressure Regulator, Coil, Wires, Spark Plugs, Fuel Filter, cleaned / refurbished all 8 injectors .. That's about all I can think of that'd be related to this issue. I dont think its the transmission, but in a month or so I'm going to try to take it to a transmission shop and have them pump all the old trans fluid out, so I can replace all 17 quarts, seeing as when I emptied it the old fashioned way I only got 1 gallon or so (guess the rest is in the torque converter). But I'd like to replace the trans filter with new fluid in it. I had an issue with start a while back and I ended up taking it to an import shop to look at it, because I was tired of throwing money at it, while there they did a compression test, and said cylinder 8 didnt match the rest of the cylinders and I'd probably need a valve job. That said, there's no way im going to pay 2k for them to do a valve job. Are there any aftermarket dealers that make springs / lifters / push rods for the landrovers, or is that all strictly OEM stuff? Thanks, Jared Schnelle [email protected] |

With 160k mile it could be a lot of things or a combination of a lot of things. The knocking may be anything from worn rod bearings to a sticking lifter. If it's a pinging sound it could be a timing issue. There's a good chance with the mileage that the timing chain or belt is worn. I think the 95's still had the t-belt. But, the surging you mentioned sounds very much like the symptoms of a bad vehicle speed sensor (VSS). The sensor is about $100 and an easy half-hour fix (see the Tech section for more info). If the timing belt has more than 50k miles I would check it. Sometimes you'll feel that surging right before the belt breaks. |

Put Sea Foam in it! I dont have a 95 but I feel your pain. 160k is not bad. Im sure it is something small if your engine has been maintained. |

maybe charles was suggesting using the seafoam "deep creep" in the intake. |

Here is a source for parts. http://www.aluminumv8.com/ I also have '95 D1 and had a good experience with Seafoam run thru the vaccum line of the Plenum. eddie |

How does the Sea Foam work compared to the BG44K additive or intake cleaner? |

You can use some Buick 215 V-8 engine parts, since the Rover engine really started as a GM engine. The shop that rebuilt mine used Buick lifters. They ordered oversized SS valves and special guides. So there are all kinds of options out there...you just have to hook up with someone who knows what they're doing. D&D parts in Michigan sells Buick/Rover parts, as do others. He also sells a rebuild kit for the oil pump. I wouldn't run 10-40 dino juice. JMO. Google is your friend. Mine was rebuilt at 165K, BTW. |

As far as the surging, have you checked your ignition module? Not sure about the '95 engines, but if your ignition module is attached to the distributor, like mine, it can get too hot and start to act up. (Ask me how I know)It needs a thin layer of special grease between it and the heat sink its screwed to. The grease helps to transfer the heat, or so I've read. At any rate, check the ign. module. |

I think in the 95 the ignition module is inside the distributor, not bolted on the outside of the distributor. I could be wrong. I know the vacuum advance is on the outside of the dist, and its shot, but I never decided to drop the money on that little sucker. What weight oil do you run in the disco? I figure the lucas oil stabalizer thickens it up even more than the 10w-40. I'll look into the buick items and see what I can find, since money is an issue and I'd like to try to do some of the work myself. Thanks for giving me some suggestions, Jared |

To the knocking, I'd be tempted to drop the oil pan clean that up as well as the pickup. As to the surging, have the alternator checked funny things can happen when its starting to go. |

Ok, well it's running worse today. I cant quite figure it out, when I sit still with the car in R or D, the engine will sorta surge up and down, with no change in RPMs but you can feel it and hear it. When in Park or Neutral the car doesnt shake at all and the engine runs at a smooth tone, is this just the torque converter or something I'm hearing? Also, now when I shut it off I'm hearing a pretty good rattle which might be a rocker, but I'm not sure. I guess I could drive it till it breaks, and then it'd be easy to pinpoint the problem, but that isnt always the best answer. Chris, I have a brand new alternator on it too, put it on about 2 months ago. I think I might head back home this weekend ( at college now ), and do what I can, like plugs / wires / oil pan / oil change. Any other ideas as to what I can check? Is there a way to check the quality of the VSS without replacing it? 88 dollars for a stab in the dark? |

In regards to sea foam, does this just clean up the intake? I recently had to pull the intake manifold off while re-furbishing the injectors and I cleaned all of this up. At least the available surfaces. |

Jared - you can crawl under the truck and disconnect the VSS wiring harness to test it. Take it for a test drive while disconnected and see if there's a noticeable difference in the way it runs at highway speeds. If it's been working properly you should bee able to tell the difference. What you said about the way your disco is running while sitting still and in different gears on the driveway sounds more like a vacuum problem than the VSS. I'll cross my fingers that it's just a vacuum leak. As far as Sea Foam goes it cleans more than the intake. It's supposed to clean the valve train too. It removes varnish and carbon deposits. It's reported to be good for sticking valves and lifters. I'm a little skeptical about it "fixing" anything, but it's good maintenance. For $6 it sure doesn't hurt anything. Sea Foam also recommends adding it to your crank case oil to clean and de-varnish internal components. If you add it to your oil, do it soon before an oil change. You don't want to run that stuff in your engine for more than a couple of hundred miles, or so. LR mechanics and shops swear by BG44 as a valve train cleaner and a product that helps with sticky valves/lifters. Techron is another good "heavy duty" cleaner for injectors and valve train. |
