Hi all. First post on the board here, but I've been enjoying the boards for a while now. What a wealth of information! I've had an engine knock for a while now. It sounds very similair to a cold diesel engine. This happens when the egine is cold, first thing in the morning or after it has sat for a while. The service tech diagnosed it as cold engine piston slap. But after hearing all of the valve issues these enginess can have I am wondering if it isn't a valve issue. My rig is a 00 DII with 90K miles. I've used synthetic oil since the second oil change on her and try to always use 93 octane gas. I have recently used some Marvel Mystery Oil in the tank and that seems to help a bit. I've also kept up with all the scheduled maint. I've finally made the last payment on her and want her to last for a LONG time. Any advice is appreciated. Thnaks! |

If you have a mechanic Stethiscope, first thing in the morning, I would start it up and listen to everything I could to try to find this issue. Could be as simple as too low a viscosity of oil to a cracked manifold or a loose down pipe to manifold bolts. If you don't have the stethiscope, a long screw driver to the ear and associated part works just as good. |

Dan, What grade oil are you using? When you used the MM oil, was that in the gas tank? There are much better products that many here have used with good effect. Excellent move using synth., BTW. What brand? Mobil 1, Redline, Amsoil? |

I have had same and the solution is difficult to find. Piston slap is a reasonable explanation if it only happens when cold. Also a well tuned motor affects the sound. This means good spark (good wires, coil, plugs properly gapped) and fuel (injectors clean, fuel filter recent). Carbon deposits can also affect it. |

Eric, Castrol Syntech 10W-30. Yes used the MMO in the tank, 4 OZ per 10 gallons of gas. Do you think a 15 weight oil would be a good move? Cheers, Dan |
