I am fresh off a plug, wire, and rotor replacement and do not think my problem is fixed. When starting, the engine turns and turns but takes a few attempts to kick over and start. When it fianlly does it has very low idle and requires a couple of blips on the gas to bring it up to normal idle rpm's. Not a lot to go on for the experts on this board but I am trying to figure out if this is a normal occurence. I'm a brand new owner so I'm not sure if I should troubleshoot this or accept it as one of the quirks of the brand.

What's the mileage? D1 or DII?

Sounds like you've got either injectors clogged with carbon, something with your idle bypass valve, or a related problem. If there's too much carbon buildup it can starve engine of gasoline.

Felix,
It's a D1 with 119k miles. Any recommendations on injector cleaner?

I just use STP Injector Cleaner, but it's not a quick fix thing... it's for long term upkeep.

Check out the "General Non-Tech" section of this forum, and read up on the thread about Seafoam. It's a bit more potent than your average injector cleaner and may give you immediate results.

Also, go to the tech section of the site and check out the article about the Stepper Motor (another name for the idle bypass valve). It's a common problem on D1s.

Hope that helps.

Ron, have you checked your battery lately? What about air lines? Clean IAC (stepper motor). Just few pointers on usual causes.

Felix - STP is one of them Wallyworld brands, that seems to make no difference whatsoever. Stick with B&G, man. It will make your truck happy :-)

Yeah, I've heard those things about STP, but it seems to have cleared up my rough idle a bit (?) Maybe I'm just imagining it... but for $1.08 a bottle I won't be looking any gift horses in the mouth :-)

I'll keep B&G in mind in the future...

Leaking injectors.
When it is parked, fuel leaks out of the injectors into the chamber causing a flooding condition upon startup. Once the extra fuel is gone, it starts and smokes a while, and runs rough until it all burns off.
Check the pressure on the fuel rail before you start it. If there is no pressure, you probably are losing it through the injectors.
Mine does the same thing, and has for the past 4 years. I have changed a few injectors, but haven't hit the right one yet.
It isn't a real problem, just annoying.

Great ideas - I will do more research in the other sections here online. Is the stepper motor a DIY project? How about replacing injectors? I'm all for doing the work myself as long as there aren't too many special tools, etc required.

Stepper motor is about a 1 out of 10 on the DIY scale.
Injectors are about a 4-5.
Both are fairly straightforward.

could be a fuel pump check valve also. will cause the same fuel pressure bleed as an injector leak. put a fuel pressure gauge on it and start it. verify your fuel pressure is what is should be at idle (not sure myself, but these guys should be able to tell you). then shut it off and watch the fuel pressure. again, not sure what the land rover spec is, but usually if it bleeds off more than 10psi within a few minutes it will cause long crank time. this test wont tell you where you are losing your fuel, but will point you in the right direction.
