I beleive this may have been asked before but a search of the site does not return anything. Sorry if its a repeat.

Anyway, does anybody know the size of the engine oil drain crush washer (3.5l thru 4.2l)? Mine is leaking so needs replaced at the upcoming change but my location prevents me from acquiring one at the dealer.

Thanks in advance for any info.

The OEM one is copper. RN sells them for cheap. I think 10 bucks will cover you for awhile.

Is the washer truly needed? I was home for spring break and while I was out fixing something on my mom's jeep -- yes, a jeep, I was depressed for awhile:-( I tried to convince her to get a disco-- my dad changed my oil as a favor for me. He didn't buy a crush washer and he said he didn't see one on the drain plug.

Is this a bad thing? I've never notice my rover leaking oil before or since the change.

There should be one there, if it's been torqued like most have been @ Jiffy Lube through 5 or 10 oil changes it'll look like part of the drain plug. If you don't replace them every once in a while they will no longer compress & will leak, or some numbnuts will crank on the plug, trying to seal it, until it strips.
Who knows how I got the AL ones, they seal fine @ the proper tourque though.

all the ones I've used have been copper. the ones listed on RN's site are copper for $1.80 each.

is it necessary? I've always used a new one and not had any leaks. others use the same one for up to 5 times with a little leakage.

for the small cost I use a new one each time the sump is drained.

I bought LR oil filters and they came with washers. The washers look like aluminum, not copper. These are the washers that the Chattanooga dealership supposedly uses. They seem to work fine.

OEM crush washers are copper. Some aftermarkets are aluminum. Either works fine.

"Is the washer truly needed?"

Yes, it will leak without it, but you might get more than 1 oil change from 1 washer. All I can vouch for is my 98 Disco. If I don't use a new washer with every oil change, it leaks. Apparently others have been able to get multiple oil changes from 1 washer.

I can vouch for the idea that multiple changes on the same crush washer will result in leaks; hence my question. The only reason I asked is that its a real bugger ordering $10 worth of stuff from the States and I'm 4 hours from the nearest Rover dealer that knows anything. So off to my local NAPA or CDN Tire to see if I can get a washer, thanks to Bob and his info.

Once again the beauty of a Rover when you live in the bush, sometimes you have to improvise when it comes to parts but I can always find something that works at the local parts stores. You just can't tell them its for a Rover or they freak out.

Anybody seen the QD for the oil drain plug they sell at Advance?
I couldn't find the right size for the Rover, but we use them on the airplanes and the work very well.

Has anyone used the white nylon washers instead? Good or bad results?
