After many years of coveting Discos, I am finally the proud owner of a 96 DI. Its as much of an experience as I hoped it would be. They are definately cool. I am starting a fix-up/up-grade campaign and have a few questions for starters. How.....exactly do you guys/girls manage to keep all of the light bulbs working on these things? Do you realize there are approximately 17 different bulbs in the back alone? I just got the Disco last week and just joined this site last night. I have for a long time been impressed by this site and the technical discussions that go on here. I'm going to throw out some questions with hopes that somebody may have had the same problems and can offer some insight. Here are a few current problems 1) Vanity mirror lights dont work, both sides. Could all the bulbs be out? 2) A/C control panel lights work 2 out of 10 times they are turned on. Is this common? 3) Is there a light in the Glove box? 4) Does the ring around the cig lighter light up? 5) The high mount light clusters in the rear pillars..... what is the bottom red light for? MIne has a bulb but doesnt seem to ever come on. Is there a difference between euro light bulbs and the ones we buy at auto zone? Some one told me the voltage is different and the autozone ones wont last as long? help would be appreciated. Robert Payne Ocean Springs, MS

welcome to the wonders of Lucas Electronics. i'm afriad i can't offer up any helpful advice, i just wanted to say "welcome" and tell you that i can sympathize. my '97 Disco has electrical gremlins too. my rear wiper doesn't work, my passenger side front seat stopped working a few months ago and i have a few other small things. the multi-function switch was replaced when i bought the truck, but this stuff has failed since then. anybody have any ideas? oh yeah, and the ring around the cig lighter does light up.

My thoughts - 1)Yes or could be a fuse - sometimes on these vehicles its not the fuse you expect 2)There was a post on this recently try a search 3)Yes - I've seen it discussed - I think you need to remove the bolts on the glovebox hinge (7 mm I think) then take the box itself out to access the bulb up above there 4) Yes - probably bulb or loose wire recent post on this as well (search for cigarette lighter) 5)Believe this is for the Rear Fog Lamps which are controlled by the fog lamp switch on the left binnacle surround... Also want to try a neat trick - open your driver's side door and turn the rear wiper on - it won't work...then close the door and try it - Viola!! |

Just be lucky the bulbs in your shifter console haven't gone out. That was the biggest pain in the ass ever. |

God Bless you all, It's been weeks since I wanted to ask about the bottom red light but I just kept forgetting to ask, so now I just went and check and guess what? that is the answer, I think I'll use it all the time now, specially when I want extra braking power. -Marco |

Rear fogs only work when headlights are on, If a turn signal/running light bulg works only occasionally, it's a dirty contact, Remove bulb, sand/clean bulb and socket, Lightly coat both with dielectric grease (noalux) and reinstall, That should solve most of the exterior light probs. Peter. |
