Ok, you guys are probably tired of my questions regarding tires, but here's another one. Ivan got 245/75-16 BFG A/Ts put on for me on Thursday....he came home late last night and we had a look at them.I drove her around the block....things felt great....went to turn into the driveway (sharp turn) and it rubbed/caught so much it shook the wheel!!! We got out, inspected....the tires are rubbing mostly on the right side on the FRAME (support beam?). They rub a little on the left, but you can't tell when you drive it. SO, I freaked out, thinking I should have just bought the stock size and that they were going to get ruined! We called the tire guy today to see if we could exchange them and he said yes, or we can adjust the steering rod. I want to know, is this common? Is it ok to adjust the steering and keep the bigger tires (I must admit,I like them)? Obviously, I'm learning new things each day. Thanks for the help in advance, S |

Susannah its doing this for everyone with big tires. Just adjust steering stops. You loosing some in radius of turn with bigger tires, unless you sticking on spacers (they allow your tire to go sideways sharper). |

Lot's of people experience that Susannah. The steering stops are located on the swivel pin housing. Have another person crank the wheel to each side and adjust the bolt so the tires don't hit the radius arms. Matt |

Thanks guys....Ivan is doing that as I write,(I'm working unfortunately). Sorry to sound like an idiot...just don't want to mess up anything!! Would these tires have done that even in the stock size...because of the deeper tread? |

It's possible. I have 265/75/16's BFG MT KO's on my D1. The lugs on the side rub the radius arms sometimes. Just adjust the steering stops so they don't. Enjoy the new tires. |

SSV- Sorry you are working! Post a picture of your 245's when you are all done if you could. Your suspension is stock, right? Also how did the Wally World floor mats work out? Tim |

Steering stops adjusted and I'm a happy driver! Love the new tires! I'm really impressed with the way they ride being an A/T tread and stiffer sidewall/ply. I'll post some pics tomorrow (working on an exam tonight!). Tim, my suspension is stock..for now! And I ended up getting some genuine rubber mats for the rear from Ebay--love them! Still looking for the front ones, but I do have beige ones up there from WalMart or Kmart and they are great. Really thick; they just slide around b/c they are too small.

The 245's will hit the trailing edge of the rear fender opening when the suspension "stuffs". The noise from the front tires hitting the suspension won't compare to the sound the tires make against the quarter panel! Even with a suspension lift, the tires will still make contact. Nice thing about the aluminum, after you trim it away, you do not have to worry about corrosion from bare metal! |

Thanks Trevor, I'm going to test her out this weekend and look into cutting the fender wall. I would prefer having a friend around who has done it before though! Tim, I posted pics of the new tires in the General-non tech section "I need tires..." |
