That's the harmonic balancer, its supposed to add stability in addition to the steering stablizer. It has a neat little teather that allows it to drag along when you rip it off on the trail. Looks like a lot of oil under that truck...

I thought that oil leaks were normal for LR D1.

Ryan, clean everything under the truck and watch for leaks. I though my D1 was leaking too much, then after washing everything off I found it was just one of the oil cooler lines leaking a little bit and blowing everywhere. I would hope no oil leak would be normal on any vehicle.

My 96 had the balancer...but I left it to become an artifact somewhere in the mountains of Oman. I not sure where because I never noticed any difference in the handling...still don't.
SandMan
P.S. My 96 leaks just enough oil to give it "character".

Ryan, try using "oil eater" or the citrus stuff. it's enviro friendly and just sprays on with a squirt bottle. It's cleaned mine up good. every time I washed it for a while I'd spray some underneath. slowly but surely it's starting to looked clean under there. helped me realize that the leaks i had were small, and like the other post said before, the oil was just spraying around.

Cheers Andy

Ed,

I lived in Salalah for two years as a kid. My number one dream is to ship my disco to Oman for a return trip. We had an FJ60 there but I was just a young pup so I didn't get any action. did see pretty much the entire country from the back seat though.

when were you there?

i'm really jealous you got to have your landy there.
wow.

i've got the omani flag on the side of my disco:

Ive removed them off the front axle on 2 disco 1s with no ill effects.
As a bonus the rubber mount used to hold it on is the same as an engine mount. 3.9 v8
So I left it there for a spare. :-)
