Anyone know a fast way to tell if my 1996 Gulf Spec Disco is OBDII compliant or not? I tried hooking up some software to it and its not talking although the same software talks to my 1999 RR. The software guys are saying that not all 1996 overseas models are OBDII. Is there a way to tell OBDI from OBDII rigs?
Thanks...SandMan

96 was the first year for OBDII. I currently use and OBDII reader on mine.

The OBDI rigs will have the numeric display, probably under the passenger seat, for your codes. Also, If you're OBDI, you most likely have a distributor. According to my info, this is true for vehicles sold in the US after Jan 1, 1996. Sorry I don't know if that applies to Gulf Spec, but I'm unaware of any transitional system that would be GEMS and not OBDII. I'm using the scanner I got from OBD-2.com.

Big Ed -- I bought an OBDII scanner, and it reads the codes fine.

I don't think LR forced OBD2 on to everyone....immediately, so its not a sure fire thing thats its OBD2. Be interesting to see whether he has a box under the seat a 4.0 v 3.9 etc

She's a 3.9i, yes to the distributor (don't they all?), no box under the passenger seat (actually nothing under there but sand), and I have an OBDII reader that "cannot connect to vehicle". Again, it'll read the 99 RR just fine.
The reader folks say the OBD connector might be bad. Pins look fine, a little dusty, I'll try cleaning it with electro-plug spray.
Anymore ideas?

I think 3.9s are OBD1 in the US. Have you tried an OBD1 reader? That's likely the problem.

All cars and light trucks built for sale in the United States after 1996 are required to be OBD-II compliant. The European Union adopted a similar law in 2000 for gasoline-powered vehicles, and in 2003 for cars with diesel engines.

More info on plugs and types can be found here:

Joey and Felix...thanks. I think my Gulf Spec 1996 with the 3.9 might just be OBDI. Was hoping to share the OBDII tool between the 99 RR and the 96 Disco. Doesn't look like it'll work. Crap...
