I'm sure most of you have seen my recent posts, Im the new guy. Wanted a Disco forever, finally traded my cherokee and a skiff for a 96 D1. Drove it for a week and it went kapoot in the driveway, wouldnt start. Spent all day today trying to figure out why. D1 is in a million pieces in my shop right now. Maybe 2 million. Many many wires inside. Finally figured it out. Stay with me here....

1. Truck was wrecked front right side a few months before I got it.
2. Previous owner replaced bumper, etc. with TJM bullbar (really nice).
3. When attaching bull bar he left the hose for all of the light washers (which were not re-attached by the way) laying up under the hood by the front end of the washer reservior.
4. Idiot (me) opens the hood after the trade (scared too open it before the trade) and noticed this hose laying there right by the (air) hose connection on the evap cannister. No hose was connected and there was a hose laying there. Sooooooo
5. Not knowing any better (I do now) Idiot (me) attaches the hose to the cannister air inlet.
Are you following this???
6. Couple of days later Idiot cleans the windshield.....not once but many times...marveling at how well the new wiper blades work. Picture me sitting in the drivers seat watching the wipers like Im at a tennis match with a stupid grin on my face.
7. Idiot parks the thing in the driveway and goes inside feeling warm and fuzzy about the new Rover.
8. This is the point where I'm overcome by the depth of my stupidity. I'll let you figure out the rest.

Howed they get all those wires in side these things? I thought relays only happened during the olympics.

The new guy

Hey Robert, welcome to the joys of LR ownership!

I have to admit, that this is the first time I have ever heard of anyone mistaking their headlight washer line for a vacuum line. That's gotta be worthy of some kind of award!

That said, are you certain that is the problem? While pumping washer fluid into the evap cannister is not recommended (as far as I know :-) ), would that cause the fail to start?

Welcome, :-)and thanks for the chuckle. My 96 has failed to start on occasion, there have been many suspected reasons, but none definitive. My last episode occured July. Resolution was to loosen the gas cap, which still applies today. I got a blocked up tank breather, I guess. With these trucks, there's a lifetime of learning! Are you hearing your fuel pump come on when you turn on the ignition? No whine, that's a clue. I'm assuming that you crank strong but it doesn't fire up. If not cranking, that's another journey!

could you really have pumped enough window washer fluid into the cannister to cause the return line to dump fluid back into the tank and contaminate the fuel?

was the fuel tank almost empty or full?

the fact that you shared this makes me feel you will fit right in here...welcome to discoweb:-)

I think I have it narrowed down to the fuel pump. I pulled the tank and emptied it out, my truck has 142K miles on it and I was shocked at how much crap was in the bottom of the gas tank. I live in South Mississippi, nearest dealer is New Orleans so no parts until monday. My local Autozone guy (by the way, they dont sell LR fuel pumps) asked me "is that one of those Australian trucks?? KINDA! There are so few Discos in this area, that owners actually still wave at each other when they pass on the road.

In retrospect, no...I doubt the water had much to do with it but it sure added some levity to a long day of seeming endless try this try that. I ordered a repair manual this morning, that should make life a little easier.

Interestingly....I inherited a 92 RRC when a friend of mine passed a few years ago, it sits under a cover in the back of my shop. I got the manual out of it and looked throught the schematics, the fuel systems look very similar.

" nearest dealer is New Orleans so no parts until monday. "

First thing you need to learn as a new Rover owner is to purchase your parts elsewhere unless it's something you can't wait on. Take note that Nathan at www.discountbritishparts.com will take great care of you.
As for the fuel pump, I replaced mine with a Carter brand for a GM vehicle, had the same plug and everything, just had to splice some fuel lines together and I was done at about 1/3 the cost of a new LR fuel pump.
Check under the tech section for a parts cross reference table. later.. and welcome.. RS

Oh, also don't neglect to go ahead and swap out your fuel filter while your at it since you just cleaned out your tank. P/N listed on the parts cross reference here on DWEB.
