Ok here is the deal. Service Engine light is on and the fault code I get is P1172 (Oxygen Sensor System Too Rich Fault Banks A & B). After some investigation by way of inspecting the air intake I realized that I did take in some water on my last wheeling excursion. And also that I'll be installing a snorkel soon. The pictures attached shows the story. I'm guessing I fried a sensor or circuit somewhere along the way. I've checked the oil and it looks fine. What's the most likely thing to go when you take on water? Also if I hold two fingers over the intake when I take the filter off it stales. Is this normal?? Any help on this would be great.

Had the same codes on our D2, replaced the MAF and reset the light and no codes have been thrown yet. Not sure if water ingress is the cause or not, because my wife drives the D2, and doesn't take it swimming very often. The check engine light actually came on after One day of my driving it back into rock quarries, etc. when I stole it one day for work. Long story short, I think the life expectancy of the MAF on the D2 is 50-60k miles. Got mine from Nathan at discountbritishparts.com

Mass air flow sensor. Its a filament mounted in between the air box and the intake manifold. Try to clean it with a residue-free solvent, then pull the battery for 10 secs (to reset the light). ps its kinda stuck inside the plastic thing, behind a mesh gauze, so (unless I am mistaken) you can't get to it physically, you can only spray clean it. Oh, time for a snorkel now Dean |

What problems if any will this cause if I have to drive my Disco for a couple hundred miles before I can get it fixed? |

No problems if it's just the mass airflow sensor. Maybe a few less miles on a tank of gas, but no big deal. |

Dean thanks for the info. After cleaning out the MAF with electrical cleaner and disconnecting the battery the service engine light has gone off. Let's see if it stays off for the next few days. If it comes back on I'll go ahead and replace it with a new sensor. |

Service engine soon light is back on. Any idea what I should try next? Or should I just replace the MAF and go from there? |

service engine light comes on when reg sched. mant. is required. Bridge the connection behind the l/r sticker behind the passenger kick pannel. use a paper clip. if you have problems email me and i will help you. |

D2s' only have one light that come on when a fault code is thrown. Take it to Auto Zone. They can read your codes and tell you the exact fault. |

Its quite clearly a dirty filament in the MAF sensor, if it came on after you took on water (and MUD, from the pictures). You can try to clean it (use a RESIDUE-FREE solvent, such as electrical contact cleaner, although since its fucked you can probably try anything, but make sure it doesn't contain oil.) Undo the battery to reset the light and drive again for a while, see if it comes back on. If it does, try borrowing a good MAF sensor from someone if you can, or buy one from Nathan. They are quite expensive though. As I said, its almost certainly this, considering the timing you mention and the state of your air box. Dean |

Oh I don't think you can access the filament directly, you have to quirt cleaner through the plastic gauze. |
