I did a search and I did find what I was looking for but then the power went out here and now I can't find the thread anymore. I have a 99 D1 and I beleive I read that the bolt holes are 11mm and one person used a 7/16 fine thread on it. Is this correct? Also if someone could tell me how to fabricate a tie down to go there with available parts from Napa or Carquest type stores. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Jeremy

Jeremy
Just put some in my 96. I used 7/16 bolts about 1" long. I then used wire clamps to hold the steel rings that you actual clip things to. The wire clamps are basically a C with two holes in the end to run through. I used these because I don't anticipate putting a huge load on the tie downs (I only have a cargo net attached to them now) and they are rubber coated so they stay quite. Hope this helps.....OH yeah, I got everything from Napa.

Feeling stupid here, but what do you mean when you say wire clamps (C)? Or if I know what you are talking about how do you atatch that to the 1" bolt? Sorry, I guess I'm not visualizing it very well. Do you by chance have a pic? Thanks again for answering the bolt Q.

You're right, that was a bad description. I found one in my tool box. They only cost a couple of bucks. I cant remember what size I used but they were bigger than the one pictured here. Just make sure that you can get the bolt through the holes and you'll be all set. I had to use a dremel on mine to get the bolt to go through. The metal is really soft, so you'll have to be careful. I've yanked on them pretty hard and they are fine, but for real heavy duty stuff, you might want to find something beefier.

Kevin,

That little thing will not hold much and all. My tool box would rip that sucker out. Certainly if I cranked down on the ratchet strap, it'd be over for them.

Your first sign that these would not be a good choice was you dremel cutting through it easily.

Brian, what happened to your rear seats? did you take them out and put a sheet of plywood down?

The problem I had was that there is only one hole on each side. All the nice fold-down tie-downs that I could find had two bolts or four bolts, I didn't want to actually drill through my floor.

So, as a desprate measure I simply put an eye-bolt through each one, added a washer to the inside, two washers + a lock washer, to the outside, and screwed it down tight. I figured I would have to deal with it for the short term until I found a good fold-down alternative.

As it turns out, the simple $0.50 eye-bolts work great, they are pretty strong, and even though they don't fold down they are pretty much flush with the padding in the rear area. I actually had to add two small 'beaners to each one so that I could get a hook into them. The 'beaners now act as the fold-down option I was looking for.

This is to say, the eye-bolts don't get in the way, and they are cheap.

Sam,

Yes, seats are in the rafters.

It's 1/2" MDF w/ carpet glued down (glue acts as waterproofing). Holes drilled to match factory tie downs. The board goes to the back of the front seats when they are in the farthest back position.

I have used ratchets straps on the hooks until it ratchets no more. 2 other things I used broke immediately. Anythin held on by a thin plate of metal like those 2 pictured above, can take it. I don't what my heavy stuff to budge.

There is an old thread somewhere, where someone found some really trick "flush" mounting tie downs. Much better then those above, including mine. Mine are just cheap and heavy duty.

Brian, I realize mine aren't the greatest solution but the question was regarding sourcing parts at Napa. The whole operation cost less than 10 bucks. And ought to last until I need to hold down something more substantial than my tool kit and recovery gear. The factory cargo net that I have isn't capable of holding much more than that anyway. Made a huge difference in keep stuff from shifting all around when off road.

I couldn't tell by the picture, but are yours some kind of hook on a swiveling base?

myself and quite a few other people have sourced the chebby/GMC tahoe/suburban/yukon tie down brackets. they fold down and are well made and black to boot. about 7 bucks each.

here's a pic of my stuff strapped down with them:

when bolted through the body with some proper washers you can ratchet down as hard as you like.

here's a good cloes up pic from craig kobyashi's truck:

Kevin, that is all fine, but I would not trust the clips that you posted to hold down hundreds of pounds. What I have are not great, but they will not break. They are hooks and they simply turn about the anchoring bolt.

Jack,

Right now mine are just threaded to the factory mounts. By "through" do you mean attaching a nut to the other side?

I purchased six triangle-style rings mounted under a bracket with (150#) rated metal-screws on either side.... I just checked under the body to make sure I wouldn't pierce important things and drove the brackets right through the carpet and body... I then ran 1/8" rubberized cable through all six of the tiedowns to increase my lashing abilities. all for less than $20 dollars.

If you mean 150 lbs, my tool box alone weighs near that.

What is interesting is that Land Rover sells a luggage retaining system. Not sure if it is up to everyones standards or not, but I am sure that you could either make it work or source the parts somewhere.

The LR system long since evaporated off the parts shelf for D1s, wouldn't be surprised if the d2 system worked
