<first> I've got a 97 Disco, 124K miles. Runs great, no fluid leaks, uses no oil between changes (3.5k) but, for the last 20K miles, an increasing engine noise (tapping) is heard. Tapping is louder when the engine is cold, and louder when accelerating. It is a noise that is more irritating than anything else, I prefer to get rid of it if I possible without spending $$$ to do it. Mechanic said fuel injectors were the source and the engine is very clean. Does this sound reasonable? Ive done the Sea Foam thing, which really did not product any smoke, (but it did show a small leak in the right header gasket) so I am not suspecting carbon buildup on the exhaust valves causing some valve tap. Are the injectors field replaceable, or do I need to have a "professional" do the work? Comments / suggestions much appreciated. - Chris

I had a similar noise on my 99DII. This may be the redneck way to do it, but I ended up taken an old garden hose and cut about a 3 foot section off. I put one end to my ear and the other I moved around the engine until I pinpointed the noise. It ended up being a downpipe gasket. I think it went away after it warmed up due to expansion. You can try this and see if the noise is coming from the header gasket. Not sure if this helps or not. As for the injectors I have no idea. Beau |

I would check all your exhaust gaskets first. Also check those cats... It may be a simple fix. Also what sort of mechanic stated the issue??Was it a LR mechanic..if so he may be on track. If not it was one of those Ford Ranger Rover or Toyota Land Rover guys I would get a second opinion. |

Injectors usually make more of a clicking sound than a tapping |

This is exactly what my 97 D1 did right before the ex. manifold started to REALLY leak. Now it has three inch cracks in it. |

I am very curious to hear more about this. Our 98 is clicking big time. It is very embarrasing. I did the broomstick-ear thing and it sounds stronger on the drive side, cylinder towards the front. I cannot see any cracks in the manifold and I cannot see any exhaust leaking. I had a crack where the cats join the rest of the exhuast (Y pipe) but had it fixed last week. Ticking is still there. What should I look for to inspect the injectors?

Fix the exhaust leak first, then see what it sounds like. Those exhaust leaks often trick ya into thinking it's a mechanical tapping...

It is your exhaust manifold-to-downpipe gasket. Like S.C. Young said, fix the gasket(s) first, then go from there. If you don't have a broken stud or cracked exhaust manifold, you might get away with just tightening the stud nuts. |

An update Using a stethoscope found the engine to be surprisingly quiet. The noise is heard listening from the left front wheel well, not from the engine. A re-test with Sea Foam showed an exhaust header to down pipe collector gasket leak on the right side, not the left side where the noise is heard. I expected to see a leak on the same side as the noise. The problem has to be exhaust related. With the mileage, its probably time to replace the mufflers, cats and other related stuff anyway. I am going to have it checked out and then order the parts. If anyone has a preferred supplier for exhaust parts or advise it would be much appreciated! Many thanks for all who have help me out on this one! Chris

Would this noise be a tick tick tick noise that never goes away? thats what I have on my 96 on the right hand side. I just turn the radio louder. |
