I recently removed the front grille and checked the AC fans on my '97 D1 with 110K miles. I turned on the AC switch and watched them spin. They were spinning (turning actually) very slowly, obviously too slow to be considered normal, i.e., 1 rotation every 1 or 2 seconds. Oddly, each side would spin at a different speed. I could reach inside the fan cage with a screwdriver and give them a spin, and it appeared to "help" them temporarily but they would eventually slow back down almost to a crawl. Obviously defective, and for a very long time I am afraid. I would like to begin troubleshooting by testing the electrical connections for proper grounding, etc., but have a question: The fan power wires are connected to each fan motor but are sealed and coated so as to be permanent. To free the wire connectors so they can be tested I would have to cut/remove the rubberized coating. Is this okay? I suppose a better question would be: Does anyone have any advice for troubleshooting these fans? I already have the electrical specs but could use the basics. |

You can take the front grill off the car and get access to the fan connections, they are on top and sit right above the radiator. Don't need to cut anything out, just unplug the connectors and test them from there!!! |

The fans were turning with the air being sucked thru the rad and grill. Check for power on the connectors with a test lamp etc. Some only come on when system gas gets hot. Bazzle
