Seems late in the game for a 96, but my valve covers have just stated to ooze and I'd like to clean them up. Dumb question: What are those screws ? Appear to be knurled headed screws. How are you removing or tightening these ? Anyone know of a standard size metric screw that may replace these freaks of nature if I ever get them off ?

Damn, I just put a set of valve covers on last night, and I can't remember exactly what they are. IIRC, you need a 8mm deep well 12 point socket to get those screws off..

Thanks,

Yup. 12pt 8mm and its pain in arse to unscrew ones that close to plenum (no space whatsoever).

Nathan - did you drain oil before doing that or just unbolted, unplugged them hooses ans tucked new gaskets in?

A 5/16 12 point will also get the job done.

Tom - they were all ridiculously loose on my 94, so you might not have such a bad time with it.

Same here, the bolts were not even finger tight!

Yeah, Some are indeed loose. I guess I'll be ordering some gaskets from Nathan (Discount British Parts) and doing some work next week. Thanks !

Tom if that's the only problem you might just tighten them up, see if that stops it leaking. You have to take of the plenum to get to the covers, and a bunch of hoses and pipes.

I say go ahead and get it done, that way you can get a good look at the inside of your engine. When I replaced mine I was surprised on how well kept my 95 looked. I have to admit it is a pain in the a$$ and a lot of work, not difficult though!!!

When I replaced mine Land Rover said I should replace the bolts at the same time. I don't know if there was a TSB on them loosening up or if they were just overstocked on bolts, but they havent leaked yet. At the very least I would threadlock them.

Good points. I would think things are still pretty clean inside. Running strong and have always kept up on oil maintenance. I think I'll tighten them up, clean her up, and wait. If still leaks, I'll pick up new hdwr and get busy.

I'm replacing mine today. I plan to do other things at the same time, like the intake gasket, so I should be occupied for some time. If one doesn't already exist, I'll do a tech write-up.
