yesterday, during acceleration at about 50 my 96 disco w/107k started to misfire and the ce came on. codes are p0301 (misfire cyl. 1) and p1316 (ignition system or misfire). i have read all related posts but am unable to find specific two together. i reset the codes and no new ones since about 15 miles but truck is idling a little rough and feels like misfiring at different speeds. vss? how to check for sure? stepper motor? coil pack? plug wire? valve job? any suggestions?

pulled plug #1 and it had carbon build up on one side only, also assessed that it sputters a bit out the exhaust when you rev it up and let off gas. What could cause carbon on one side only? any ideas?

I would say plug or plug wire.

guys,
found a place under plenum and around fuel rail and injector above cyl. 1 where a rat had made a nest from the hood insulation! could this have been causing some kind of an overheating issue @ cyl. 1 that could have caused misfire?

More likely the rat's nest may be causing a short somewhere. Check the wire insulation for the fuel injectors and plug wires. Also the coil pack.

The spark plug gap is important or you'll get misfire. If not platinum plugs check that the gap is tight. The spec should be under the hood on one of the stickers. Re-gap if necessary.

would a valve seat or guide issue cause the one sided carbon build up?
