Steering and Gas tank skid plates. Do I buy metal or aluminium and what should be the minimum thickness? I know that Safety devices is probably the best but I don't got $800 for one skid plate, so who makes a quality steering guard? Also, I can't seem to find a gas tank skid plate anywhere. Probably could of searched but it has been slow on this site so I thought I would give us something to talk about.

TIA,
Jeremy

I have one of the early Southdown D2 Steering guards bought in 1999 and it has been excellant, but I have heard others say they cheapened the materials after the first batch to bring the price down.

I recently installed a Scorpian Racing gas Tank Skid plate from http://4x4ag.com/ and I have been VERY pleased with it!

I have the DAP Al. steering guard on my D1, and it has held up good so far. It costs about $190.

Rovers North sells a Southdown steel gas tank skid plate.

Rockware makes a nice gas tank skid plate for the D1.

try atalantic british they offer a kit and for under 800.00 you get front dif protection, rear diff protection.,steering skid plate, and transmission skid plate. good deal.
i would recomend steel if you make your own. the steel will slide over the rocks as alloy will catch and burr up.

that AB kit is not worth it.

the transmission plate is too big to be usefull.

just buy the components seperatley if you want th AB stuff (which isn't bad aside from the trans plate)

not to get into it. but to each their own! that transmission skid plate saved me a transmission on more than one occasion. yes it does look big and cumbersom! but it also stopped all the roots and sticks that jam upward into that void. maybe even saving a ripped of line? who knows! dam those beaver ponds anyway.
i just wanted a kit that was bolt and go. and it had everything there, less the fuel tank plate. but if you got any fabricating experience then build your own buy all means. as you will know the cost of the material is so dam cheep compared to store bought! but i guess that is the mark up game.

I have all 4 of the LR skid plates - steering, front diff, rear diff, and fuel tank. I believe LR gets them from southdown. All of them are excellent, thick and solid. The front steering could be better designed since it does get hung up sometimes but creates a nice angle between the front steering rods and the bottom of the front diff. So I am guessing the designer made it where you could slide over a rock without a fear of the front diff getting hit.

Well, if you get that AB trans skid plate make sure that the bolt holes where the plate mounts to the long bar are correctly drilled. I got one and the holes on the top of the bar don't line up with the bottom of the bar. The screws that hold the plate to it won't go on right. Of course I have never put it on my truck and I have had it for at least 4 years now.. Maybe one day I'll use it. It is a big time hang up point though unless you have lots of lift.

I should've mentioned that I sold the Southdown steering plate when I got my Rovertym bumper and skid plate. I also have the South down front and rear diff plates still installed. Very happy with them.

I concur with Rob.

AB kit is good stuff, with the expection of the gearbox plate, but definitely not worth the kit price.

D1 Southdown steel steering guard and RoverTym steering rod. You'd have to drive over the side of a cliff to even think about bending these two parts.

If anyone is interested in the steel Southdown name plate let me know...I'm not into stickers or names on my Disco.

I went to southdowns website and all I see is D90 stuff. I would like to see a pic of the southdown steering guard for the D1 and a price, if ya know what I mean.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Forget about Southdowns USA source. The guy that runs it is named Jim Pappas. He is a salesman for the LR dealer in Parsippany NJ (he owns the pink panther on the showroom floor). It happens that is where I bought my DII from and the Southdown set I put on were the first ones fitted to the DII in the USA. Regardless, when I was looking for a gas tank skid plate I emailed him 3 times looking for pricing and availability. I got a canned respose from his server saying he will get back to me in short order....I've been waiting since last October/November.....

Southdown prices seem kind of steep -- how do they compare to rovertym?

Also, the front axle guard -- wow -- that doesn't kill your ground clearance or anything

Bingo Glenn, and John C, whom I will introduce you to sometime, not only answered my request, but he relayed the skid plate to me via mutual friends across New Jersey to save my Cheap Fuck reputation so I could buy more Craftsman Tools!

Dave, you're right, kills clearance and judging by the number of dings, scratches, bends, gouges and other sundry disformations, it is doing one hell of a job!!!
