Has anyone used K&N Performance Gold Oil filters on their vehicle? Is that an upgrade to the OEM filters? Any thoughts?

I have used K&N filters for as long as I can remember. I use the air filter, judiciously oiling it so as not to damage the MAF and the oil filter (HP3001) that is equivalent to the long Land Rover filter. I use Mobil One oil and feel that the extra cost for a premium filter ($9.95 at Advance Auto) is a very small price to pay for a little extra insurance.

I too use the HP3001 oil filter. No problems, and warm fuzzies. (Sorry no laboratory tests on oil cleanliness.) Even if performance is only as good at the OEM filter, the 1" wrenching nub is worth the extra few dollars.

Although I have not used this filter on a LR, I use it on my Datsun. I've found, through research, that Mobil 1 and KN have the highest filtration rate, while maintaining good flow. Their "surface area", or filtering element area, is considerably greater than the equivalent filters.

That being said, will a few microns make a difference...probably not. Above all else, the key to longevity is the actual changing of oil, and the frequency thereof. Frequency, quality oil, quality filter, in that order, in my opinion.
