Hey everyone-

Go to any LR dealer and in the service area lots and you'll see all of these RR's leaning and squatting from the failed air bags, friend of mine replaced with coils, the other bagged the RR for an '03 D2a-

Just wondering, is the SLS on the D2 SE7's the same type setup and is it an inevitable time bomb? I guess its nice to have and all but I was just wondering if they blow at the same rate as the RR's and if I have that to look forward to down the line. Should I plan on seeing coils myself in the future?

Thanks-

Jeff

My SLS has failed and I am replacing with coils. Not worth the hassle for me to keep repairing or replacing those air bags.

I am looking at my crystal ball and I see coils in your future. EAS, SLS, ABC, and whatever acronyms will eventually have problems and fail, steel is real, replace if they fail and don't look back.

To answer your question. They do not fail nearly at the same rate as a RR. Maybe, because their main function is for self leveling as opposed to mutiple height level dictated by speed and driver. I and others I know, who off-road, have SLS and have not had failure (if you could see me, I'm knocking on wood). Only one buddy of mine has replaced.

You will find that the airbags will wear out over time, but so do coils. It is just that when the airbags are gone there aint nothing there. The Discos system is very simple compared to the RR. The RR has all kinds of height sensors and multiple compressors. Way too much stuff. I will tell you that the air systems on the late model rovers are no less relaible than on many other vehicles with a similiar setup. Before my brother got is 02 RR he had a 99 Navigator and the system failed twice on it. The system is much better on the later model RRs and especially on the brand new ones, but sucks on the Classics. I would not think that the air setup on the Disco is anything unrelaible, but rather pointless. You can not deadlift a vehicle with air springs which sucks, and most of the time they dont ride as well as with coils. I know this sounds ironic, but as is the case with most every vehicle I have driven (I work at a dealership, I get to drive a lot of vehicles). It is cheap to convert a D2 to coils in the back so I really would never not buy one just becuase it had it. I aint gonna ever touch ACE though.......

SLS didn't fail on our D2 of three years, and is holding up on the TReK after off road abuse. Ride's much harder though. I will be going to springs.

I'm the one friend who has replaced my bags with steel. Had one failure on the Miller Jeep trail. LR warrantied and replaced my airbag, but after seeing how the entire top of the bag, as well as the plastic containment ring, pretty much blow apart, it was only a matter of time until I replaced the bags. If you keep the bags, carry wood blocks and bailing wire, it might just get you to point B.

Yeah, Keith was knocking on wood too - all the way home:
