Two quick questions:

1. To fill the ATF on a d2, should I just the same type of hand pump that you use for filling the differentials?

2. I'm going to also try my hand at greasing the driveshafts for the first time. Aside from a grease gun, are there any special accessories I need to pick up? Any particular type of grease recommended? Anything else that I need to grease while I'm at it?

To fill ATF: Yes, a normal hand-pump will do. I have two: One for gear oil, and one for ATF.

A normal grease gun will do, I use Mobile 1 synthetic grease. I don't know if it greases any better, but it sure smells better than lithium grease.

Are there any issues with mixing the synthetic with what's on there now, which I assume is the lithium-based since it was probably last done at the dealership. (Just bought the disco a week ago).

Also, the Service Manual mentions something about removing a "blanking plug" from the front drive shaft and screwing in a "1/4in UNF grease nipple". I'm assuming I can pick one of those up at NAPA?

I don't believe there is any problem mixing greases. However, when I started greasing everything myself, I pushed enough grease into the u-joints to push all the old stuff out. The slip joints however, could be damaged if over-greased, so I added just enough, and have had no problems.

Re the nipple: Yes, a standard grease nipple will work fine. However I thought it was a metric size... You might want to double check.

What kind of tool to you need to remove the ATF drain plug? It seems like a size five allen wrench fits but I definitely can't get enough force to get it off with an allen wrench...

The drain plug is a T-30 torx head bolt. You can pick up a set at any Sears, Home Depot, etc. The fill hole plug has a 1/2" square hole in it, so the head of a 1/2" socket driver will work. (Even better with a 2" or 3" extension.

Re the grease fitting:
You can remove the grease nipple from the rear drive shaft and use it in the front. There is a small plug in the front shaft. Clean off the drive shaft and you will find it. It takes a small allen wrench to remove it. When finished put the grease fitting back into the rear shaft and put the plug back into the front. I too use Mobil 1 Synthetic...
