I am currently researching the possibility of adding a 12 volt receiver to the cargo area of my D1. I'm not talking about the cigarette lighter plugs, but rather a wall-type socket you would find in your home. Only problem is I am clueless about this. I mean, every outlet I see says it's for 120v applications; is this acceptable for the truck's 12v system? Also, what gauge wire should be run? I am not keen to the idea of tapping into the factory power sources, so I will be starting from scratch and running straight from the battery. I really appreciate any help or guidance you experts can give me.

what do you have that's 12V DC and has an AC type plug-in? If you want an outlet to run AC things then you'll need a power inverter.

I wouldn't use a 110v plug just because someone could easily forget that whatever you are plugging in is 12v appliance rather than 110v appliance and plug it into a 110 outlet an fry it. You might check Radio Shack and see if they have any European round plugs that you could use. Or you can use a 2 wire plug that yuo can get at Autozone or Advanced Auto or Napa that has one male and one female side by sidesort of like a trailer wire, but only two wire. As to what guage qwire to use? that depends on what you are going to run off the plug. Personally if you don't know how much you MIGHT put thru it I'd go to at least 10 gauge, 12 at the very minimum.

Adam, you'd need to hardwire an inverter to convert the 12VDC to 110 VAC.

I'm not entirely sure what you'd need to run on AC power that can't be run on DC. An inverter is pretty inefficient. It'd be easier to connect a 12VDC socket in the rear cargo area.

About the only thing that I can think of that you'd need to run on AC power is a blender, but this nifty thing takes care of that.

LOL Craig. I think there is a blender out there somewhere that has a chainsaw motor on it.

FWIW, our 4Runner came with a 115vac outlet. Very cool little gadget.

Damn, a factory AC outlet?

That's badass. What would you ever run off AC power in a vehicle though?

Beau, Dude! That blender absolutely kicks ass. More kick ass than a factory AC outlet in fact I think the element has one now. ;-)

But for $369 I would get a compressor for the beast (need it anyway right?). Rig an attachment for the air line that would spin a standard blender attachment. Use any blender container you wish.

I know I have seen this setup before, maybe even on a rover.

There is another one of those gas powered blenders called the Daiqiuri Whacker that was on Jay Leno. It runs off a motor from a weed whacker.
