Refer to the post "Bad Shutter... Sometimes" of 10FEB2004 for background info.

In brief, at speeds of 65MPH and up, very intermittantly the engine misfires for a few seconds, the check engine light comes on, the engine continues to run mostly OK, as in OK 99% of the time.

With discoweb's wealth of technical info it was clear my problem was probably the TPS. I bought a new one, stuck it in, and the misfire is GONE, I can confidently say over the last two months of driving.

However the idle is now 1500 RPM which is a tad annoying and completely thrilling descending steep hills off road. Evidently I need to have the diagnostics run when a new TPS is installed. Nah, there is probably money involved there. My D1 has never been to the dealer and goddamn if this will be the reason. So I put in the old TPS and the misfire problem is back every once in awhile, but the idle is back down to 700 RPM. What a machine!

After reading all the threads about high idle and the associated evils of ECU's going south, for the time being I'll take the timid approach and live with the engine misfire.

The question: is there a prayer that having the idle reset at the dealer would work long term? I'm guessing the new TPS output voltage is a tad different - I'm guessing an adjustable resistor might just also solve the high idle, but which wire? Any thoughts?

Dan, There is an idle speed screw adjustment on the throttle covered by a tamperproof plug. Check for air leaks or a bad breather first. Also I would try resetting the ecu, by disconnnecting battery for about 10 mins. If all else fails pull that tamperproof plug covering adjustment screw and adjust with allen wrench.
