I'm at the point in my wheelin' where I would really obtain the benefit of a Detroit in the rear. For those of you who have done this, did you go ahead and upgrade to HD shafts or even more so, how have the stock ones held up to the abuse? Also, should I plan on replacing bearings while the thing is apart? Any suggestions will be welcomed as I'm just now entering the "locked" world. Thanks.. RS

1: No still have stock. I am respectful of the stress and encourage you in parking lot scenarios at low speed to let the truck idle though any full lock turns or risk a tire chirp.
2: Great time to go through the axle and check everything out. some bearings showed signs of water ingress so there was a benefit from taking this approach

Thanks Frank but I did a search here on DWEB and only came up with one half way decent source of info. That's why I posted a new topic, so I could get some info from people who know.

I've been using stock for the last 6-8 months. No problems noted. I'm mindful of the rear-end at all times.

Go with the HD shafts. If you any moderate wheeling you will break the stock shafts and usually the detroit with it. I went with the HD shafts and the peace of mind is worth it alone, especially since i dont want to buy a new detroit.

HD rear axles arent all that expensive (relatively speaking) these days. I went with some used rover tracks HD axles, which go for new for about 385$ to 440$ new, depending on your wheel choice(alloy vs steel )

I was told it is a must especially if your running over sized tires. I'm sure you can get by without them if your lucky or don't push your rig but whats the use of having them then? I put em' in because I figured if I break an axle on the trail the damage and frustration would not be worth the price of the axles. Plus if you don't buy em' and they do break there is possible loss of fun, possible towing, possible damage to the locker and then you will be buying the HD axles too. I guess it's a piece of mind thing. If you don't buy the HD axles you'll always be waiting for the stock ones to break and to me that would be like Chinese water torture.

Thomas, he is talking about a Detroit. He really doesn't have a choice wether he wants it locked or unlocked.

This issue is beat to death about once a month. You shouldn't even consider using the stock axles with a DT. It's the worst decision you can make. DT and HD axles go hand in hand. Trust me, you don't want to replace your DT when you break an axle. Actually do it. However paint a straight line down the long axle. Pull it out in about a week or two, if it hasn't broken by then, and count how many times it has twisted. I'm saying you'll get about 4 turns then it will snap. So try it and find out. As long as you have time to replace the diff and the money to buy another one plus the HD axles that you should have bought in the first place.

So I think you should do whatever makes you happy. I just don't want to tell you later, "I told you so."

Perry, I will bet one of my nuts that if you break an axle, you will break the DT also. Well maybe not my nuts, but if you don't blow the diff, you should probably go right to the convienent store and get a lotto card, because you will be one of the luckiest MF'ers ever.

On the XD I have stock shafts with DT in the rear.

It works for me, but may not work for you.

" I will bet one of my nuts that if you break an axle...."

That's enough to make up my mind.. thanks for the help. I'll wait patiently to obtain the entire package of DT and HD axles.
