I noticed that the new Diff Lock on DIscovery 11 is not a Diff lock at all. It works off the break system. Seems fool proof. If a wheel is spinning with no tracktion then it breaks the spiining wheel and transfers power to stationary wheels. What do you think? Is this better than Diff lock? Please help I may get rid of my 96 Disco and get a 2001 |

Mark, do a search on "CDL" for more information, but here's is the short of it: The D2 has a electronic traction control that uses the ABS system to improve traction when a tire is spinning. Some D2's can have the CDL engaged by installing some type of linkage to engage the CDL in the transfer case. Theoretically a D2 with CDL engaged should give better traction than a D1 since the D1 doesn't have ETC. The '04 D2 comes with the CDL and linkage from the factory. That being said, with your D1, you can improve the offroad performance by getting a traction differential (Truetrac, Detroit, or ARB) for the rear and adding heavy duty axles. Cost is ~$1,000. Much easier than buying a new truck. |

The ETC system on D2's I find to be very unreliable, espeically with any type of mod and bigger tires. A LR dealer tech told me that the pump was not strong enough. Of course he blamed my bigger tires, but i had ETC problem before i put them on. He couldnt explain that, there's a shocker. CDL helps out ETC but i think lockers are much better. no need to upgrade to get the TC. its not worth it. |

I know you guys bash the ETC alot, but it does work just fine. Of course, there are more things to go wrong with it. I don't know if it works any better or worse than CDL because I have very limited experience with CDL. I've had my '03 since Sept '02 and have had no ETC problems yet, I'm sure they're coming though. I definately agree, don't get rid of the '96 just to get ETC. It's not worth it. I would recommend lockers as well. |

On a trail ride some time ago, there was a challenging, technical bit: a steep climb with loose sand, tree roots and rocks. You were garanteeded to lift a corner or two. Watching safely from behind a nearby tree, several new D-IIs made the line effortlessly. As each corner came off the ground, the brakes engaged that wheel. No spin, no sweat. I, on the other hand with a well used D-1 had quite a bit of wheel spin even with the CDL engaged. Had to take three shots at the line and I've got 35+ years of four wheelin' experience. ETC, when it works, it works....

ETC works quite well. ETC with a TT works even better. ETC with a TT and the CDL locked is better yet. ETC, Front TT, rear Detroit, and CDL...well, it's all covered. |

"ETC, when it works, it works..." and when it doesnt, it sucks. Unfortunately for me, it didnt most of the time. If it works, good, but i wouldnt want to rely on it. |
