I wanted to let everyone know of a big scam out of Nigeria. I posted my 18" Prolines for sale on this website and www.roverconnection.com for $750. I recieved an email from a guy who was interested in purchasing them so I sent him pics and the usual stuff. He said that he wanted to purchase them and that he was overseas. The catch was he had to send me $3,000 dollars extra to pay his shipper because he couldn't pay the him.He said it would take 30 days for another check to clear. This just sounded to fishy. When I got the check I called the bank that was on the check and they told me it had been stolen from them. What he wanted me to do was send 3,000 into his account to "pay the shipper" and then he would "pick them up." The check would have clear because it was real but wouldn't have come up as a forgery until it recirculated back to the home bank. Meanwhile, I could have potentially given him 3,000 of real cash while I had been given fake money. I wouldn't have lost the money, but the bank would have. Everything just didn't seem right from the start and luckily my notion served me well. Don't fall for the SCAM!

Yes, that's a fairly common scam. If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

A lot come from Nigeria because the U.S. has no treaties with them, therefore we can't prosecute them. Nigeria is a "no man's land" and can pretty much get away with whatever they want.

I had a friend who ALMOST fell victim to the same thing. He would have been out lots of money, and his $18,000 used BMW.

There's lots of dirty people out there waiting to take advantage of others.

I had nearly the same thing happen when selling a truck on LRX. When I started questioning him about a contact at the bank so I could check on things before he sent the money, he suddenlt disappeared.

A guy here at work had his 57 Chevy posted, long story short they sent him a check for $50k. Seems there is a bank in SC that changed names. The checks floating around have the old bank name on them and the accounts no longer exist.

Can people do a similiar scam with credit Cards. Had a guy contact me about a winch for sale in Indonesia. If I take his Credit Card can they stop payment and take the Credit out of my merchant account?

Of course they can put a credit card charge into dispute, but the same thing could happen with someone buying from you domestically. You have to decide how to handle things and stick to it.

Aaron,

As a general rule of thumb, I never accept payment for international orders through credit cards. The risk is far to high, IMHO.

Usually, if an order comes from Indonesia, that's a pretty good sign that its fraudulent. I spoke with my CC processing company and they said that Indonesia far and away leads the world in credit card fraud. I don't know why, but they just do.

If you send a winch off to Indonesia, the card will probably get accepted, the winch will get shipped off to the "customer" a few weeks later (when the real owner gets their bill), the charge will get disputed and it'll come out of your merchant account, and you'll be SOL.

It sucks, but the burden is on you to make sure charges are legit. I usually also ask for the security code on the back of CCs. That way, they at least have to have the Credit Card in hand to have that info.

Thanks,
Nathan Hindman

Interestingly enough, I got another E-mail like that a while back. My post back to his request was that I normally wait until the check clears and then I send the item. Interestingly enough, I never got a return E-mail from the individual. I had posted some small items a long while back on roverconnection as well.

Well, I was just contacted by someone doing the same thing, and he was either looking on LRX or on DWeb, because those are the only places my truck is posted. He said he was from the UK. I'm pretty sure they have enough discos over there already!

I know that Pirate 4x4 had similar problems with scammer trying to take their money as well. One of my friends who owns a jeep told me that some scams have been happening to them on Pirate. It seems to be a pretty common scam, both running out of Indonesia and Nigeria.

I've had two occassions on ebay where I got zinged by people from Romania and from Indonesia. One was a situation where the guy from Indonesia emailed and wanted to know if he bid on my item if I would accept payment from his friend that owed him money. He offered to pay me $300 more than the total cost for my service. I declined.

The other situation was a guy from romania closed an auction by clicking buy it now. The auction was listed and featured and cost me $25.00 total. I listed as always, Only ship to United States. Anyway, I declined to ship the item to them, and reported it to Ebay, who basically did nothing. They didn't refund my costs, and only said I had the option not to complete the transaction since I had indicated US shipping only.

Lot's of con's out there.

I did get burned in one instance where some ass sold me a gps without sending all the parts. I paid, and got only part of the package. His ad indicated nothing about the item missing parts. Long story short, I complained to paypal, ebay and visa. Visa gave me a charge back for the costs necessary to complete the item per the ad. In the end, paypal reversed the charge back as they claimed I didn't return the item to them per their rules. In the end, I got burned.

Karen,

Yep, I sold it without any problems and met a guy to deliver it about 80 miles from home.

I didn't have any other problems, and haven't had any other ebay problems. Only got burned the one time, and lost my listing fee the one time.

Thanks for asking though.

Well, daggone Greg, leave that poor
low-feedbacker some words! :-) Glad to hear it worked out. So far nearly all of my ebay deals have been positive transactions. I've only left one neg and that was because I won an auction and the seller had seller's remourse and refused to sell. I hear so many odd stories though, I always wonder when my time will come.

I got a new variant of the Nigeria emails yesterday, but deleted it before I thought of posting it here. I'm sure I'll get it again, though.

The gist of this one, was that the sender claimed to be a wealthy woman dying of cancer with six months to live, her husband was killed during the recent war in Afghanistan, she has no heirs, and want to leave her 14.5 million dollars to the church, i.e. whichever greedy moron dumb enough to buy the sob story.

I get those emails from some guy in Africa with some $31.5 million U.S. that belongs to a deposed person of royalty who needs to park the money in an offshore account. If I contact them, they'll just dump the money in several $100k accounts in my name - what a deal! I guess they don't know the FDIC raised the maximum some months back...

I was just bidding on a Generator on EBAY and got EMAIL from a guy who offered me a new 10KW generator for $400 shipping included.
I told him to send it and then I would forward the check.
He responded that if I sent him half and if I did'd like the Laptop I could send it back.
I told him I thought we were talking about a generator.
He advised me it was made in Italy.
I advised him I was born at night but not last night

I sold my laptop on e bay a few months back. I had payed 1700 for it new, it was 6 months old, and i had the buy it now option at $1000. I had a guy contact me from indonesia offering to pay me $2500 hundred for it, by check, plus shipping, as soon as I got the price estimate. Said his reason for wanting to pay so much was Dell wouldn't ship outside of the US. He wanted me to close the bid, and just take care of it outside of E-bay.

I didnt at all like the sound of it, and reported him, never heard anything back on that, and he never e mailed me after that.

After reading these posts, I'm sure glad I didn't get gready.
