OK, I'm in Houston, TX. People here suck at driving. My Disco was rear-ended by some jackass about a year ago. My buddy was rear-ended in his Disco last week. Now that I've replaced my rear bumper with a SG, I've lost my rear fogs and blinkers in the bumper.

So, I found this piece of reflective tape at a truck stop. It's the same stuff you see plastered all over the back of 18-wheelers. I bought a little piece and scotched-taped it to my bumper to see what it looks like. I think I hate it. But, it does get your attention when light hits it.

Both pictures are at night--with and without the flash.

Thoughts?

I can say one thing you will be seen with out much trouble from behind.

Of course for fun you could have done the ladder too.

Not bad though and a good idea if you are worried someone will not see all the other lights on the back of a disco driving at night.

Looks good Bill. I was thinking on getting some of the same stuff for mine. I've got the lights in mine and always turn on the red 2" fogs via the old rear fog switch when I drive at night.

Here's another D2 with the same tape:

That rear bumper rocks. I know I've seen that design before. Who makes it?

If you are talking about the one Jamil posted, that's Greg Davis' old design: http://www.discoweb.org/gregdavis/index.htm

What about my tape? :-)

Bill,

It looks great! I like it. Reflective tape is always a good idea. I don't think it looks too big.
When you're on the trail at night, you'll make it easier for whoever is following you.

If you feel like playing with tape some more, open up all of your doors, approach each door from the front, the rear, and both sides. Put reflective tape in areas that would be visible in the dark by an approaching vehicle. Mark the door itself and also the door opening. You should be able to get reflective tape that matches your paint so it blends right in during the day.

Just something easy and cheap to do for safety. That way, if you are powered down and another vehicle approaches, they will see the boundaries of your truck and also any open doors. If you want to be really creative, cut some of them in a tall triangle shape so that anyone approaching can see which end should be up :-)

Actually yea... my buddy is a cop; he has reflective tape cut into arrows he stuck in the door jams in his cruiser. The arrows point away from the car. Pretty good idea...

I think you need the "Stay Back Fifty Feet" sign posted on your spare as well. Maybe some lights like the bicyclers wear on their helmets also. Just my $.02 worth. (Hehe)

Brightly colored jerry can on the back works well. Also a bright yellow pintle hook.

The tape you put on is called conspicuity tape. It's a little bold but it gets the job done.

Both Avery and 3M make reflective vinyl that would work too. Beauty of that is it's made in about 10 different colors that you could choose from to make your rear-end look better in the daylight, including relfective white (looks silver) and reflective black. You'd probably have to go to your local sign shop (Fast-Signs, Sign-o-Rama, etc.) or vehicle graphics place to get the material.

Bill,

Take the time, and install lights; even if you have to mod that bumper. As far as the tape goes......

Look at yourself in the mirror and repeat 3 times:

Don't be that guy

Don't be that guy

Don't be that guy

Bill,
I kinda agree with Paul. Not sure who that guy is, but considering how much we go through and how much we spend on modifications, I'd just do the lights. You can just wire in some reds on their own switch if you don't want to rewire the turn signals etc. Here's a pic of them lit up:

Bill maybe you could get a baby on board sign to hang in the rear window. I've been rear ended twice in a full size chevy truck with a shinny crome rear bumper, didn't help any with being seen. If it helps you sleep better at night keep it. Me, I would take it off, just a little too gay.

I say get the lights. Seems to me that it would be more noticable/cleaner with a good set of lights.

hahaha...

Opinions are like...

Tom, I'd expect no less from you... you're still pissed I told you to take back the tires... have you broke anything yet? And, where are those trimmed DII pictures? hahaha

Ho and John, It's still scotch-taped on... just thinking about it. I know I know, you hate it... I hated it at first, but it is so obnoxious; it's growing on me.

Everyone else, yea, lights are cool... we put them on Josh's truck: http://houstonlandroverclub.com/images/members_vehicles/josh_gorman6.jpg
The only problem is that the little bastards are like $50 each. Regular 2" truck lights are dirt cheap, but they will not fit in a SafariGard bumper--the grommet that holds them in is too big. Those LEDs we installed in Josh's bumper are for custom choppers. They look good; they're $50 each. I'd love to find a 3/4" light or LED for less than $50... I've looked all over AW Direct, and all of the online LED places... I cannot find crap that will work. The light fits, it's the grommet that holds it in that is too big. I can simply think of other things I would rather do with $200...

The tape is growing on me becasue it is so ugly; I'll give it a few more days...

Bill are you an only child? Sorry I'm not pissed, couldn't care. I didn't have to trim much, moved the washer bottle, removed the mud flaps, and trimmed back the stock plastic sliders. No radical change in appearance. Broke the front driveshaft and an ABS line. The driveshaft went as a result of the lift and the ABS line went because I didn't properly secure it after extending it and it rubbed, live and learn. I'll update my gallery one of these days.

Tom

PS the tape still looks gay, maybe you can find rainbow reflective tape.

Bill your all about obnoxious anyway. I say keep it and start saving for the lights you want and then maybe consider a smaller piece.
I like it. See and be seen.
