How do I make an image file for my dweb profile pic small enough? I set my camera resoultion to 640 x 480 but the file is still like 130kb. I tried converting to gif and lessening number of colors but that only takes off a few kb. How do I get the pic below 80kb?

JPEGs have different levels of quality, from highly-compressed to almost like a bitmap. Try to set the quality level on your camera to 'Standard' (rather than 'fine'), if there is a choice. With standard quality a regular 640-480 will be around 70-80k.

And if you want to use a picture you already have, and don't have any good editing software, one thing you could try quickly is to save the jpg as a bmp (windows bitmap) file, and then save again the bitmap as a new jpg file. It may by default use regular-quality.

Take pics with the highest camera resolution setting, then use a graphics or picture type software to reduce the image size and jpg compression. This will produce very good results. You can download a bunch of shareware graphics programs for free if you don't have one already. Another tip, once you reduce the image size say from 2160x1440 to 640x480, your pics will become less sharp or fuzzy. Most programs will then have the facility to sharpen the images.

Christian,

The easiest thing for you to do at this point might be to email the pic to someone, have them reduce it (only takes a few seconds), then have them mail it right back to you so that you can upload it. This is what I had to do until I got software that did it easily.

The software that came with my camera was difficult to use and it took several manuevers to get pics sized properly.

I highly recommend the program that Ritz Camera gives away for free on a disk. It is called Picassa, check the box to choose the size you want and it's a done deal. Really easy. Someone told me that they could download the program from the Ritz website, but I don't know if that's true.

Good Luck, Jamie

Unless I'm way off on this, Ritz camera won't let you download the "Photo Director by Picasa" program -- you have to spend $300 or more through the site.

I did see that they give you the program at the store though...

Feel free to email me (email in profile) if you want pics resized for the time being...

Andy

Thanks everybody, I'll try those suggestions. One of them is bound to work.

Thom, what do you do is MS paint to make the file size smaller? I'ver tried a few things, albeit unsuccessfully.

IN MS paint go to image/stretch skew. then stretch it to a smaller % such as 50% for horizontal and vertice. You can also go to image/attribute to resize it, but that will cut into the pic, like cropping it. Then save as a jpeg or gif file.

what programs are you guys talking about?
to resize the image, you only need to do 4 things:
- calculate its 2D FFT,
- crop the center out,
- calculate the inverse FFT, and
- take the real part of it.
When you're done laughing - whoever has Matlab handy, I'll email you the script. The resulting thumbnail quality is about what MS Photo Editor makes, but if you have 100 photos or so to deal with, it sure comes handy.

Christian-

http://www.fookes.com Thumbnail 2.6 works great and it's free. Go to settings after you download and make it whatever you want.
